To many lighting choices... - will one 400w bulb work?

the tank is an oceanic 75, 48x18...

I am thinking of building a tall canopy and mounting my 400w SE MH about 15" over the tank, in the middle. Concerns are coverage, which I think I can work with at that height, painting the inside of the canopy flat white will help a lot. I may also add 2, 40w NO actinc or 10k bulbs with it.
My other concern is that the bulb to be centered over the tank, would be right over the center brace...

Opinions? Anyone with a 400w MH who can turn only one on and see what kind of coverage they get from the center of the bulb out to one side, and how far off the tank is your bulb?]

Honestly... I don't think you'll be real happy with that solution, especially with the center brace right under the bulb. It'd be better to trade(plus some $$$) for a pair of 250's imo.]
 
[Mark, if you want to see what a single 400W metal halide over a center brace looks like, you can come over and I will turn off the side lights.

I can say this, you DON'T want to do it. :no: Not only does the center brace glass diffuse the light it also acts as a algae grow station on steroids. Really sucks!]
 
[Thanks for the replys on the 400....was hoping I could get away without spending $$$!

I'm torn on buying 175 or 150w halides for the 75g and the 150g I want to setup (fw plants) or halides over the plants and use my 4x65w PC on the reef....

Its a catch 22, I can't use the PCs until I get new lighting for my plants, which I don't want to do til I move them to thier new tank, which I can't afford right not either! lol

I had thought of just using 4, 40w NO bulbs over the reef, but even that will take $100 in bulbs to do + wood for the canopy!]
 
[Think I may give these a try...

Ballast, 10k bulb, reflector, mounting hardware for $150...Anyone else interested? 2 more and can get them for $135 each and split shipping :D]
