To Fuge or Not to Fuge... That is the question....

I'm a fan.

I had my 300gal tank both ways. It's much easier to maintain with a fuge.

There are tons of articles out there...almost as many opinions too.

I had hair algae EVERYWHERE for a while. Granted the tank wasn't maintained regularly (I was at school) but I added a refugium and chaeto algae and now I have zero algae in the tank!

I also have 'pods of all sorts and very stable levels. I'm a big fan!

Worth it... I have been going without one on my 140/45 combo system and am now going to plumb one in soon. More water volume and nutrient export is always a good thing.

Jeff,

The algae thing is true...I've seen that too.

But another cool thing about the fuge is watching all the life that flourishes in the non predatory environment. Life in the fuge is very dense compared to the display tank. There's all kinds of cool things running, crawling, and swimming in the tank. When I first set up the fuge, I watched the fuge at least as much as I watched the main tank.

So, that's another cool thing about having a fuge.

Definitely worth it.. I could _never_ get my nitrates below 10 before I plumbed in the fuge (could be the macro, could be the DSB, no idea).

Once you Fuge you never go back. I can't imagine where the nutrients the macro grows on would go without one

I built one on my last tank it worked wonders. In about 2 weeks I had my nitrates down from 10-20ppm to 0ppm. The DT was much easier to keep clean of algae too!

At the moment, I plan to do a HOB Refugium on my 36g corner tank. I think I'm going to have one custom built kind of like the CPR AquaFuge. I want something built in between the small and medium version. It should hold around 4.5 gallons.

I am actually thinking about putting 2 of them on the 90 i am getting

I have had the large trickle and the wet dry and the canister and I have found there is no equal to a good sump with Algae.... I do still run my Caniter but that is mainly for Carbon type media...

Uh, you might want to re phrase that. I doubt you are really saying a refugium is not an option."]

Something like that.

Having one is the only option.
How about that.
