Tiny Rant... Problem Stupid Critters...

I was feeding my zebra eel a few hours ago and I wasn't fast enough on pulling the feeder rod away from him and he bit down on it and proceeded to pull against it. He was fairly well anchored in the rockwork and caused a small rockslide...

I spent an hour putting it back up, got bit twice by my female GSM and am not happy with the look of that side of the tank now.... not to mention my hammers, frogspawns are very unhappy right now.

Note to self... tease eel out of rockwork before letting him close enough to bite down.

lol, sorry, not laughing at the you just the problematic critter, i know it sucks, ive been there and know the irratation. i have a spot like that right now myself. i dont know a good way to feed him any more cuase now when i get him out of the rock he ends up hitting a coral frag and popping it off...BAH! sucks that hes too cool and i couldnt possibly get rid of him

I have the same problem with Kalypso. I have to hand feed her because if I use a stick she won't let go of it and during the tug-o-war she wraps around rocks and my yanking dislodges them from their positions. Afraid she'll either squish herself, the corals, or bust the tank.

That sucks Dave. I don't have an eel but my female A. Ocellaris always bites my hand when I'm feeding with a turkey baster, which is particularly annoying when I'm trying to feed some palys and rics that are in the back and on the sand bed. She's never broken the skin but they can really give you a good pinch!

Ashlars clown would draw blood.

I have not been nailed by my GSM hard enough to draw blood, but when she hits me it is not funny. Usually ends in me cussing a lot, as I yank my arm out of the tank.

Yep.. I haven't had blood flow yet, but both the surprise and the force is enough to piss you off. Things are looking okay today, but I still don't like the new layout.

Eel is fine too.. he poked his head out the new cave looking a little sheepish.....

mine gbm clown is about 2" and will fly towards my hand no matter where it is in the tank....it's more scary then painful. The look in the clown's eyes is hilirious as he really thinks he's hurting me.

Back a few (about 20+) years ago, I had a green moray eel about 4" round maybe 3' long. He was tame as could be and the only way I could feed him was by taking a big shrimp (the fish market would sell me old scrimp at a discount) and using tongs force it down his throat. He never attacked the tongs.

To make a long story longer, one day when I was cleaning the tank (I had it mounted in the wall of my sportscard/memoribilia) I noticed that a piece of the shrimp was hanging from the eel's mouth. Now remember, he'd never gone after the tongs before. So like an idiot, I used my finger to push the shrimp back into his mouth, and WHAP he bit down. Here I am with my finger caught in his mouth, bleeding like a stuck pig. I had to use my other hand to pry the eel's mouth open and cut the hell out of this hand as well. Luckily there was a prima-care across the street and after the embarrassment of explaining what happened, had to have 10 stitches put in.

Dave, your situation could have been worse!

I think I'd take pain or a few stitches over rocks falling on corals, corals falling on corals and slime all over the tank :)

But yes you are right... it could have been worse. The tank bottom didn't crack etc.

when i moved up tanks i used my nem to catch my gsm. Going into the transfer 20 went seamlessly but after that she got smart. The second i got close to the nem [[BAM]] out of nowhere she came out and took a chunk out of my pinky knuckle. Got a scar to show for it. Not much of one but still visible. Threats to kill ensued.

GSM are absolutely beautiful fish, and still one of my favorites.

These stories are exactly why I haven't purchased one yet.

I still want to do a GSM/Nem-only species tank though somewhere down the road. How big of a tank would such an endeavor require?

i have seen two clowns and two really big nems in a 20L but it was hooked up to a 150 and other tanks. But that is serk's (Brian) system. I know that a 265 works out just fine. But honestly I would say for nems and clowns only a 36*18 footprint tank would be a good choice. Such as a 40B or 58 or 70.
