Thread sealant on bulkhead nut area?

Would this be a bad or good idea? I've searched some posts on here about leak issues and salt creep with bulkheads and was wondering if this would be a good idea on the threads for the bulkhead nut.

Also, is there a product that would be recommended to put on the dry side of the bulkhead nut/gasket area like silicone glue?

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Mods, please feel free to move to the correct forum if this is in the wrong place.

Are you sure you are putting the silicone tape the right direction if you wrap it a certain direction when you thread the nut you are actually unwrapping the tape

Haven't put anything on there yet. Just putting out feelers to see if anyone has any experience with doing this. I'm not a big fan of thread tape myself. More of a thread sealing paste guy. :)

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but sounds like your saying the gasket is on the dry side. If so, the rubber gasket actually goes on the wet side. That's what creates the leak barrier.

Regarding the pipe thread paste on the dry side nut, I don't think it matters too much. The gasket is what's going to create the water seal, not the paste. Might help just to keep the nut from working loose, but that's about all, IMHO [smilie=smile.gif] . I use the paste on all my threaded connections, except the bulkheads. On the bulkheads, I just installed with rubber gasket inside the tank, and then siliconed around the gasket and bulkhead, on the inside. However, don't put silicone between the rubber gasket and glass, just install the bulkhead as normal, and then silicone around the sides, if you want to. And, I'm only siliconing around the ones on the bottom of my tank, not the ones on the sides. I'm sure you'll get other opinions, as there are others that do it different.

Thanks for the reply. I got it mixed up when I typed my previous post. I meant silicone on the gasket side where the water is and thread sealant on the dry side where the nut screws on. I like your idea of putting silicone on the outer edge of the bulkhead for added protection from leaks.

some people add a bead of silicone on the inside to add an extra barrier but i don think adding thread tape will help because all the back screw does is pull the wetside gasket to the glass sealing it from the outside
