(This is not an isolated incident, unfortunately...)

Those power strips are terrible.

The timers on two of mine have stopped working... and they burn down houses apparently...

You can get a nice digital timer from home depot for about $15, that what I use.

so the one from homedepo, whats the brand name? And is there anybody else that uses those. im just looking for getting one soon, just not sure what or where.....

I have 2 of the home depot ones. I stuffed the coralife ones in the closet. They stink! After reading this, I think the garbage can is the best place for them.

homedepot's website sucks...

but they do sell it in the store.. Its an Intermatic DT-121

it's $10 or $15, and I think it was in the section with the light switches/dimmers/and other timers.

it looks like this:

I just use the old fashioned round timers. They work great. Any timer will work. Just make sure you get one with the third prong. Most lights have that third prong.

Dammit, now I'm all paranoid. Watch, you'll probably see one of these in the Sale forum soon.

LMAO,

I had the single coralife digital for 2.5 years, until 2 nights ago at @ 5am I woke up to the smell of an electric burn...my Coralife S. Skimmer's air intake filled with water and was waterfalling behind the tank....I guess a thin layer of water hit the timer and voila!....no damage to anything but the power strip. But I was checking for floaters for an hour and had everyone in the house (inc. my 4 y/o and 12 month old son) out of the rack an in jammies and shoes for 10 minutes, till I decided there was no wall fire.

Next day I bought a replacement single digital, same model (thinking the main reason was the water contact)....now I am seriously considering boycotting anything coralife..have been looking to replace the HOB skimmer anyway.

The end

Yea most power strips will fail when SALT water gets into the the socket. I had 4 digital coralife strips and one afternoon I heard something in the dining room and some tank water got splashed out and landed on the power strip and bame instant flames!!! Needless to say they are all gone now. A good word of advise is to keep all power strips off the floor and turned upside down to keep as much possible water out of the socket as possible.

One more thing the coralife and othe power STRIPS the plugs in them are linked together in a line with no wires just brass metal strips and very little plastic to insulate this is why when SALTWATER gets in these strip the conductiveness of the saltwater has a BIG role in fires plus hardly having any insulation between the brass strips in the power strip make for a great fire starter when added with saltwater. The power strips that come with the AC jrs and reef keeper controllers used wired plugs insed of linked plugs and have a 80% less chance in shorting due to saltwater in the plug and also a quick blow fuse in the strip is ALOT better protection then a breaker or GFI breaker on the power strip.
