TexasDude's rimless build log

Ok guys.. tomorrow I go to pick up my new tank. I have ordered a 75g rimless that is drilled to replace my current 75g. I'm sick of the overflow box and all the stuff hanging on the back of the tank. I will be posting pics of my current setup soon and keep everyone updated on the progress that I make. This should all come together relatively fast so I will do my best to keep it updated with pics!

Hey thanks! I wish I had started a thread for my current tank but I was in such a hurry to get it together, I didn't even think about making a thread! I will try and get some current pics up tonight..

ok. i've been tinkering with the pics to get them to where i can post them. the first pic is of my reefbrites. i am currently running 2 48'' royal blue and 1 48'' white. in the other pics, u will have to excuse the hair algae bloom, i had some bad dinoflang, algae that completely covered my tank. almost made me shut it down but i powered through it and the result was a green hair algae bloom. i've recently upgraded my CUC and i got a sea hare and he's been mowing through it. i will not be placing the GHA sand in my new tank and i will scrub off the rocks before they go in :)

this pic shows the brackets i made to be able to hang the lights.

full tank shot. like i said. GHA is a pain. sorry for the horrible quality. using paint to resize and takes a bit of the detail away from pics.

full tank shot. sorry bout the mess. not exactly organized. was also in the process of adjusting the lights.. i have vaulted ceilings so i had to use a chair and a step stool to get up there.. not exactly the safest route, but it worked.. lol

oh. and dont mind the pissed off goniopora. i had a temp swing when it started snowing and its still recovering. they are touchy.

ok! its here.. but i have to wait another week because they said the silicone has to take 3 weeks to cure and the manufacture date was 2-4-11..so possibly next weekend after next wave or soon there after.. will post pics ASAP.

here are a couple pics.

its 48x18x21 75gallon with a 1.5'' drain and a 1'' return. going to get the plumbing today also.

thanks! i'm very excited. this is my first drilled tank. i ordered the tank from Glasscages.com and i've heard bad things about them but overall, i'm very pleased with the way it came out. the seams are pretty clean and it seems like pretty good quality. i went to home depot and got all the plumbing so i will be putting it together throughout the rest of the day. the only thing i'm worried about is having to cut a hole for the plumbing in my stand. and i'm still not 100% on how i'm i'm going plumb from the bulkhead down since i dont have alot of room where the sump is. but that is a project for another day! thx for looking everyone! will be posting as i get it all worked out.

I'm going to paint the back of the tank black. What kind of paint do I need to use? Anyone? said:
Any cheap spray paint. Paint it on the outside of course. Even if you do a halfway crappy job you wount be able to tell in a month due to coraline and other algae forming on the glass.

OR, (better IMO), just get a black wallpaper made for aquariums, i say better because its more easily removable. Stick it with spray on glue (Scotch Super77 or any spray on adhesive) for uniformity.

for my previous tank, I used appliance black paint. Be sure to clean it and make sure you have no leftover lint. Also make sure to tape the sides of tank and cover the top of the tank to prevent excess spray from coming into the tank or spraying on the sides.

I will probably do a black cover on my next tank incase I should need to sell it. Some people don't like the black back.

the black background glued on there would probably work pretty good so that i could take if off and clean it if i were to sell the tank. thats a pretty good idea. i didnt want to use the regular aquarium backgrounds and tape it on there because of the salt creep and water that gets in between that and the glass.. cool. thanks for the advice.. i'm going to paint all the plumbing black too and a read on another forum to use the krylon fusion spray paint. i'm assuming thats ok to put on the parts thats stick out the top of the overflow. so anyway. this is hell having this tank sit around, all the plumbing planned out and over 1/2 of it already put together but not being able to set it up.. 1 more week!

I personally wouldnt paint any of my plumbing that is submerged. I would be afraid that it would leak something lethal in my tank.

thats good information to know Ron. I typically tend to stay away from stuff that may possibly harm my tank.
