Testing Reef Crystals

Well, I have been using Kent salt for about a year now and have been happy with it. Over the last couple of months, my magnesium has been steadily dropping. I am not sure if this was caused by lower levels in the new Kent salt or if my tank just uses more now. I finished off the last bucket before I was able to test some freshly made water. Now I have bought 2 buckets of Reef Crystals and will by 2 buckets of Kent at the Plano GB and compare. Here are the results on the Reef Crystals I just made:

Salinity - 1.026 Refractometer
Alk - 11.2 dKh Salifert
Ca - 375 Salifert
Mg - 1245 Salifert

OK, I just tested a batch of Kent that I made up last night. This is the new recipe Kent that I recently purchased on the group buy. If you are looking for Alk and Mg, go with the Reef Crystals. If calcium is what you need, Kent is your answer. I guess I should start mixing them half and half to get the best of both worlds! :)

when did they start the new mixture for kent? I purchased from a group buy about 4 months ago. I wonder if that is why my ALk is always low.

Dean,
Thanks for the update. I tested my IO recently and here is what I got, anyone care to agree/disagree?

1.026
11.6 dKH
350 ppm Ca
1080 ppm Mg

I have had the hardest time getting my mg up and now I realize that it's due to the salt. I have started to dose my h2o change h2o, but it would be nice if I could get by without doing that. I guess I should pick up a bag of RC and mix it with the IO.

I just wanted to note that the test I did on the Kent salt was the new batch with the yellow logo. The alk is a little low, but not around 1dKh as Peter found when he tested his.
