test kits

Do the test kits ever expire? We can take a water sample and test it, it's fine, if we carry that same sample an hour away why is the result so different?

Yes, they expire... Salifert lists an expiration date on theirs, not sure if the other manufacturers do as well, but if it doesn't have an expiration date, I'd stop using it after 2-3 years at least...

Hi,

I know that PH will change with temperature and to some degree SG. Your SG can also be different from reading to reading if using a hydrometer(which are not very accurate), you have to make sure that bubbles are not affecting the reading etc. As far an the other test Alk/Ca your reading could be used with a different brand of test kit or as mentioned, yours could be expired. Most have the expiration date stamped on the bottle/box somewhere. Which parameters are you seeing this difference with.

Cheers,

we use the api test kits. The test that changes the most is the nitrates. said:
Strange...I would get new kit's, I started off using API until my nitrates started testing at 80ppm, after doing the nitrate reduction method...twice... and not seeing the values change, I switched to Salifert test kits. The API were expired, must have been close to expiration when I purchased them.

Cheers,
