test kits???

which kind of kits are best?

i have the strips with the pads that you dip in the water and compare to the bottle (like the old blood sugar strips)

or are the test tubes with the drops best?

think going cheapo is ok for the basic Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate though? I just invested in the Sailfert for Calcium/Strontium. Didn't see the need for anything else. Did Aquatic Pharmaceuticals for the 3 mentioned above (plus pH, but I also use Pinpoint for that).

I'll admit that spending money on Salifert kits for ammonia and nitrites is kind of a waste because once your tank is cycled, there's not a need for those kits again.

I would recommend letting your LFS test your water for some of the basic cycle tests. Also, if there are other members in your area, you might want to ask if they can test your water.

For test that you should have on hand regularly, consider getting at least a nitrate test kit along with alkalinity to go with your Ca test kit. I don't test for strontium and I'd recommend you focus on some of the more basic parameters before testing for strontium.
