TDS Meter Help, PLeeeeze!

I just bought a new Hanna CA TDS meter and can't get it to work. I have tried to get a reading off tap water and on a 800ppm calibration solution, but, all it does is bounce random numbers around and will not display a steady reading. What am I doing wrong? Is it bad batteries? Bad meter? I've never used one before and don't know what is normal or not.

How are you using it? Did you fill up a clean dry cup with some tap / RO / DI water, put in tip in the water and turn it on? Let it sit for 15 - 20 seconds and read the numbers.

Where did you get it? How old is it? You could try it in distilled water. Or call Hanna tomorrow. What does "CA" stand for? You are not testing saltwater, correct?

Sorry I've taken so long to get back to this. I bought this off ebay, but, from several weeks ago. I was waiting for my water filter to come in so kept it stored all that time. I did try it out on tap water and yes, my salt tank, too, as soon as it arrived and it seemed to be working, then, but, when I tried it again in deIonized water and tap water once my filter came in, it would not work right. The CA should have read CE and is printed on the back of the meter and on the instruction sheet. I think it is just a model name.

So, did I kill this thing by testing it on saltwater? :?

Perhaps. I would take a good look at the probes and see if they are oxidized or corroded. You may be able to gently sand them clean with some very fine sand paper, and rinse it off well in tap water. Blot dry and try testing some RO water, some tap water, and some distilled water. Let us know what you discover.

Remember whenever you are done, always shake it off well, then blot dry it before putting it away.
