target manderins

I have two target mandarins. they both apear to be males, one green and one yellow. The yellow was in the tank first by a couple days and is half the size of the green. Once introduced the yellow chased and nipped at the larger green relentlessly. The chasing has slowed down but there is the occasional nip as the two happen into each other.

This morning I noticed that the green mandarin has a small hole in the side of his body, it's about a 1/16 of an inch in diameter, mabe a bit larger but under an 1/8". The hole is almost perfectly round and seems to be about 1/16 inch deep. The sides around the sore is white but clean and clear, no mucus, bleading or other festering.

Do you think it could be a nip mark from the green manderin that festerd and is now healing? or does this sound like something else?

They both seem to be eating fine, lots of pods and such in the tank and they even seem interseted in frozen mysis

I was thinking of putting the green in my fuge for a bit to heal, but am concerned about reintroducing him to the tank.

Or, for that mater shoud I grive the yellow a time out to the fuge and reintrodcue him to the tank in a few days. Maybe he will fell like the newcomer. The green is very pasive, never bothers any of the other fish includng the yellow.

thanks
Pete

Two male Mandarins (Even mixing it up with 1 male Green and 1 male Target) WILL fight to the death, much like Betta fish...

At least, they have in my tank...

no puffers, just tangs, bangai cardinals, 6 line, psudochromis, royal grama, lawnmower, green chromis, coral beauty and a pair of perc clowns. The only other critter that may go after him is a purple lobster that has wounded and captured some smaller fish but this wound is not a claw mark.

The manderins have small mouths that look like they could tear out a small chuck of flesh. The fact that the smaller one has been nipping at the larger, and from serks note, I suspect he's the culprit. I'll probably banish one to the fuge, at least until I decide what to do. I may even see if someone wants to trade a female for one of the males. Other then being attached to ehm it really doesn't mater to me if they are male or female, just want them healthy and happy

thanks for the feedback,
Pete

I had a six line that was extra cool...until I added a Mandarin, it went straight for it and would attack it on sight. I got rid of the six-line so you may want to watch the six-line for any aggression towards the mandarin. The first mandarin that I had was not bothered by the six-line but the next one..oh boy. As stated two male's are not gonna work out, they will find each other no matter how big the tank is.

Cheers!
