Tap Water

Hey guys,

I filled up a tank for a leak check / plumbing setup. I used tap water and initially was planning to drain it all out and then refill it with RO/DI water that I will have to purchase by the gallon

I was wondering, is it possible to filter the tap water to be safe to use? or would you recommend draining and refilling?

Thanks

not with saltwater, you will have to drain and refill

also, think about getting an RO or RODI unit as it will save you in the long run...if you pay 50 bucks to fill the tank thats a big chunk that could go towards your own filter

i wanted to chime in. as I am a cheap bastard and have tried lots of different waters.

Tap water = really really bad. you could pee in there and maybe have better luck. most tap is high in pH, which isnt so bad, but we inject flouride, chlorine, and god knows what else into it. that is bad.

ozarka water = good for people, bad for saltwater tanks. SPRING water, has alot of minerals in it. Some we dont want. The metals, etc. It maybe has alot of TDS - total dissolved solids. we dont want those either.

wal-mart water premade in the 4gal containers (not the kind you self pour yourself) = maybe better than ozarka, but still something was up with it. I figure it is also 'spring' water, or who knows, but it didn't do so well either.

Here's what does work:
your own RO/DI unit from marc or somewhere.
the water you have to pour yourself from walmart (quality depends on how regular they maintain their machine filters)
buy premade water from the LFS
I use distilled water from walmart. by the gallon jug, its about 90 cents a gallon.

study the different types of water - distilled, spring, natural, de-ionized, etc., there are a bunch of names, and they all mean different junk.
