tanks is cloudy

tank is constantly cloudy and was wondering how you guys keep yours so clear without using carbon. Is it just that your skimmers are awesome or do yal have a trick up your sleeve :) . Im running a cpr aquafuge right now with a mixture of macro and a hob filter that i took the carbon out of with a crummy built in skimmer. Oh and is there any down sides to using carbon, just wanted to do the all natural root to my tank.

Thanks, chris

Is this a new tank? Did you just add in sand? It might just be in the 'settling stage. What type of 'crummy skimmer'? Are you using a skimmer that's big enough for your tank?

It sounds like you have a nano tank. Do you use RO/DI water?

I guess I need a little more information to make a guess at what's going on is what I'm trying to say.

nah it not new the sand has already settled. Its a skilter filter with a built in skimmer, dont have the money right now for a new one, says the filter is rated for a 55. I use RO water and its a 30 long. Its has a maroon clown with a bta, pulsing xenia, assorted zoanthids, mushrooms, galaxia, hammer coral, star polyps, aquafuge with mixed macro (grape, cup, chaeto, sargassum, others too) probably about 35lbs of LR, 35lbs of sand. Im going to update my sig in a little bit with my tank info.

Thanks, chris

You don't have a PH kickin' up dust do you, can you localize where the "cloud" originates from?
Some manufacturrs "rate" their filters based on nothing but water being filtered in the tank, others rate with a barebone's setup, long story short.....filtration is one of the area's where you don't cut corners.

A. . what skimmer? Skilter? Well now I know why not to use them. My random on the spur of the moment first thought is that skimmer. I would just recommend saving up a bit and upgrading the skimmer to see if that fixes the problem.

Quite a few people sell skimmers reasonably priced. I have a Corallife Super Skimmer which works really well and is rated for 65g. $75 brand new from Drs. Foster and Smith.

HTH a little.

well today its not cloudy, could it have been a bacteria bloom? I removed the filter pads which included the carbon the day before it was cloudy, thinkin g i removed a large place where they collected. In probably about two weeks im lookin to get a aqua c or a cpr bak pak.

Also there is no downside to running carbon 24/7. Running carbon through some flow through container is very effective way of keeping the water clear.
