tank water green and cloudy HELP PLEASE

Ok my water is green/cloudy. I'm not sure what caused it. I think it started before I added a new supplement, but I'm not sure. PETCO had iron and manganese from Kent marine on sale for 70 cents. Is this know to cause this, or any other ideas. Please jump in I can't see my fish.

Ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate are all zero. And I'm running two bags of carbon in my sump. I don't have reactors but I have a small chamber in sump I put the bags.

I would do a water change, if you have a uv sterilizer run it.

Not sure in saltwater tanks but in freshwater planted tanks you dose iron for the freshwater plants

When I ran a fuge I would periodically add iron help my micro-algae and never had a problem with my water turning green. I would be more worried about the supplement that was sold so cheaply. A lot of times stuff like that get's sold off way below cost if it's very old, previously opened, expired or has been possibly not stored correctly(too hot). There is also a higher chance that the chem's have either broken down or seperated out of solution. Not saying that that is the problem but could be a possibility.

Cheers,

Ok update. I did a few water changes, and got my water cleared up. I have done nothing different, but got a red sea test kit and brought my calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium levels up to proper levels. And the water has begun to cloud up again. I even added a carbon reactor. All tests show good levels. This baffles me I have no idea?

It's turning green again or actually white cloudy?? If it's turning green again then I would not continue adding any of those item's into the tank. I'm sure additional waterchanges will help again, once it's clear just wait a week or so to see if it stays clear. As far as the carbon not helping now, that could be normal if you have been using the same carbon. The usefullness of carbon is very short, as in day's or sooner so it just may not be able to absorb the stuff thats causing the discoloration.

Cheers,

Do you have any caulerpa? That's what happened to my tank when they went asexual. I did a huge water change, cleaned out the skimmer, and added a lot of carbon. Cleared up in a couple of hours

Caulerpa is the macro algea in sump right. I have the ball of hair stuff not sure of the name. And as for the supplements I bought all new from BRS. There two part

I highly reconmend Algone. Great product for removing Nitrates. You might want to look into a product for removal of Phosphates was well. Both will help you keep your growth inhibitors under control.

+2 on the Algone. Have you tested your phosphate levels lately? If they are detectable, a product like Phosphat-E (for high levels) or GFO will reduce them. We don't run GFO, just bring PO4 down with Phosphat-E when necessary. Ball of Hair stuff sounds like Chaeto. Don't have to worry about it going a-sexual.

Where are you at now? How is the tank looking? It's been a week, any updates?

Tank has cleared up. Finally!!! I found a dead snail in tank. It just took a few days for the water to test bad. I did water changes and it took about 8 days to clear up. I hate it when something goes wrong. I'm trying to keep everything consistent just having bad luck I guess
