Tank setup opinions

OK guys here is what I have. I am setting up a new tank, a 140 (60x18x30.) The sump is 48X17 with a 13" water level. 19x17 chamber for skimmer, 22x17 refuge, 6x17 pump out (approx dimensions.) I am running a dart or barracuda for return. I am going to branch off of the return line to a remote deep sand bed in a tank approx 24x24x30 giving approx 576 ci of surface area. I plan on having 250 lbs of live rock. I am using a RS80 and RS135 to skim.

With all of the flow from my return pump and a pair of Tunze 6100s would I have any issues running with out a sand bed in the main tank?

Will 1 1/4" drains be big enough for a Barracuda?

Any suggestions regarding setup would be helpful.

Only problem going sandless in the main is it will limit your fish selection somewhat. Many fish such as wrasses and blennies need sand. Many reef tanks are set up that way now. If you want to go mainly sps corals you are on the right track, no sand means you can have a lot of gph in the tank and not have a sandstorm.

I agree.
Also, it depends what you like as far as aesthetics are concerned...
If done right, I think both can look good - sand just looks more natural to me.

Couple of things. Why are you using 2 skimmers to skim? Seems a little repetitive. For the drain, are you going to be using 1 1/4 bulk heads, meaning the drain will only be 1"? This would probably be way to small for a baracuda. Lastly, if you have a 17" tall sump, and the water level is 13" is that enough space for when the pump cuts off, and the reverse syphon and leveling off, will not overflow the sump? I realize its 48 long ,but that sounds a little tight.
As for the sand in the main tank, you should be able to have some as long as the main returns and tunze's aren't pointed towards the walls or the sand.
What kinds of corals are you wanting to keep?
