Tank meltdown due to bad carbon

Sadly, Matt and Lindsey's reef recently went through a crash, and their corals took a huge hit. If you have Kent Carbon, please verify that you don't have any from the bad batch recalled last year. This happened to many people, including Frank at Frank's Tanks a few months ago.

Call a friend if you don't know why your tank is in trouble. We have a 911 forum for quick assistance with real tank emergencies, but come to our meetings to make new friends, find those close to you and get a few phone numbers in case you need to make that late-night call when things are falling down around you.

A sad situation for sure. I know Lindsay and Matt have been most frustrated with this situation and what's worse, the source is the carbon which should have been the cure. Thanks for bringing this to everyone's attention so they don't have to go through the terrible time that L & M have gone through these past 3 or 4 days.

Oh man. I didn't know that stuff was still in circulation. Maybe best to just toss any Kent Carbon laying around.
Sorry to hear this.

The biggest hit was to SPS, I have some of their LPS in my tank. All of it looks really bad but there is one item that is important to Matt and that piece is the only one I am worried about not making it, the rest looks like it has enough tissue to make it and is already looking better then when it was put in.

I'm glad you were able to provide an assist, Steve.

What sucks is on Sunday they did a huge water change and then of course put in "fresh" carbon so that just made it worse. I tried to to get them to bring some stuff over to my tank but they wouldn't. they were scared it would contaminated my tank too, at the time still weren't sure what was going on.

Sucks to lose all or most of their SPS but hope the rest of there polys and lps make it.

When I was asking Lindsey all those questions yesterday, it didn't occur to me; today I asked her which brand of carbon they used because I remember the stories last year. I contacted Frank since I knew he had it happen to him as well and he told me it was Kent, and then Lindsey verified over the phone with the manufacturer that it was actually part of the carbon recall from last year. It's very tragic, and was very puzzling at first trying to determine what had happened.

I believe they are still working with them at this time, but expecting livestock to be replaced is unlikely.

L&M -- so sorry to hear about your crash. Maybe we should add a recall section on the Boards. Would be very helpful for those of us that don't read all the different boards/tweets on the web.

+1

Very sorry to hear of the massive loss :(

I think you were the only person who had lavender candy canes. I don't recall seeing them anywhere else...

I hate to hear about all the lost corals, hopefully the ones still hanging on will pull through.

Just a quick update. We have lost 75% of all our SPS. Nearly all the Acros died but we have a few small colonies hanging on but I don't have high expectations. The Montiopora undata and danae have been very resilient. We lost most of the Chalices. Zoanthids haven't all turned the corner but we've been able to relocate stuff so we have the higher end and duplicates in another system. The large lavendar candy canes and green colonies are nearly dead. Really sad as I've had these corals for over 6 years. said:
Sad to say the least, bad things happen to such good people.

Luckily we gave some to other members and hope to get some back when things get more stable. [smilie=smile.gif][/quote]

When you're ready, I have the frag to return. The heads split so it's 8 heads now.

Update on my side, I think there will be surviving stalks of the Green candy cane for sure. The lavendar is hanging in, not getting any worse almost every stalk has lost all the outside flesh, but all the stalks have "feeder" tenicales still and are some what opened....so we will see.
