tank level

hello guys and gals after 30 years away from fish i have jumped back in. i have 125gal. tank with a 60 gal sump. the sump is new to me and that is where my problem lies. after getting every thing set up and running sort of my problem is i can't seem to get the whole thing balenced out. the le4vel in my tank seems to drop about 2 inches every time i think i have it set up. i switched pumps 1st i had a mag 9.5 then i switched to a mag 5 and still the level dropped 2 inches has any one had this happen to them or any one have any suggestions i would be sure glad for any input...dave

how is your plumbing set up? is it a reef ready tank or do you have an overflow box? does it have 1 or two overflows? is the level dropping rapidly then slowly rising again just to drop later? is the pump split anywhere else or just strait in the tank? do you have any pics? that could help alot. how is the sump set up? do you have different compartments or just a large area for other stuff?

What do you mean by "balanced out". A correctly matched pump will be able to keep up with your drain capacity unless you are having an issue with a HOB overflow siphon.

Cheers,

wow lots of questions shows how much i don't know. i have drilled the tank it has to drain holes n one for input the level drops as soon as i get it to the level i want it starts dropping as soon as i get it there and stays at that level i have let it run all night n noth ing changes and bimmers i am not sure what it is called but when the water is at the level u want i concider that balenced out i am not sure if the pump is the right size but i have herd from others on the boards either one of the pumps i have tried should work what do u think?

Are you talking about water level in the tank or the level in the overflow??? Is this tank drilled on the bottom or along the back...do you have a internal overflow box?? It may be better to post a pic of your setup so we can "see" what you are talking about.

Cheers,

my tank has a drain hole drilled on each side of the back that is 2 drain holes which run to my rufge/sump i have one fill hole located in the back center so there is nothing coming out of the bottom no internal over flow . oh tea by the way i am i am refering to the level in my tank this is the level that drops about 2 inches aprox. to the top of my drain holes. sorry i don't have pictures for u.....dave

Sounds like you dont have a durso pipe on your drain holes. If you just have two drian holes on the back of the tank the water level is going to be right at the level of the holes. You are going to have to put a piece of 90* pvc pipe and face it up and make some sort of durso drain pipe in order to get the water level higher. What the drain pipe will do is raise the point where the water exits the tank and therefor raise the tank water level.

i thought durso pipes where inside the tank my drain holes r on the back of my tank about2 inches down on each side of the tank

with 90* pipe installed the water level would be higher. The water will be at the level where it can exit the tank. The higher the exit the higher the level.

You would also need some sort of screen to block any critters from getting into the drain and possibly cloging it.

Your going to need something like this but with a much shorter shaft.

dave thanks a loot seems to be working can't see how i missed that now the next problem is the suction noise my wife will kill me when she hears that got any solutions .......dave

if you use the one pictured above the curved "U" shape will reduce the noise. If you just have the pipe right up to the surface of the water without the "U" then you need to do something like this.....

Nicely done dave, you should be a plumber! I'll pay you $5 to tell me why my toilet is clogged

I agree beemerz, I'm just a nano guy, but when I launch my 125g within the next year or so, these guys on this forum will be my pocket guide to everything.
