Albert - Blown circuit, tank lost all power while he was outta town...

Here's the thread:

(And don't worry, when ya' first start reading and think "Serk's insane, this is about a hitchhiker octopus, not a crashed tank!", while I might well be insane, it is the right thread... :) )

That isn't even preventable is it? said:
Other than just being careful in construction, best way I know of to mitigate the risks would be to make sure all your mission critical tank systems are spread among multiple circuits, so that if any one circuit goes offline, the tank will still have enough life-support equipment online...

Wow! That is scary, and especially since I am about to leave the country for a week. I'll have my battery backup hooked up to a powerhead, and hope my tank baby sitter arrives in a timely manner if something were to happen. (Crossing my fingers)

This just happenned to me. I went out of town for a month. three days or so before I returned the power went out and the tank overflowed a little. This wouldn't have been a big problem but the water seeped to my main extention cord conectiion and shorted it. The plug heads were completely melted and were about to catch fire when y friend found it. The way I know this is that there was green oxidation on the melted conntctions. We figure the tank was out of power for a maximum of 52 hours. It killed all my fish(14) except one. and half of all my corals. I was lucky that my fried fished out the dead ones and three days later I was back to yank everything out and do a complete water change. I am up and running again. I fixed the overflow problem (stupid remote deep sand bed). i am rebuilding. It is going along pretty good. I just have to put that crash out of my head and concentrate on the rebuild.

Just a thought if you're computer liteterate, that I did when I left for an extended period...

Go pick up a cheapit web cam (Can usually be found for under $20). Hook it up to a laptop, or move a PC to where it's near the tank anyway, and put some webcam software on it.

That way ya' can keep a periodic eye on things while you're away, and can call someone near your tank if things don't look right...

Why in the world would someone with THAT much money invested in their tank NOT have someone tank sit for them. Almost ANY LFS does this if the person doesnt have friends or family near by. I feel bad for him but Geez

Hey Brian, I really like this idea. I guess it can be set up so you can just go to a specific website from any computer to check on your tank? I think I'll do this just for fun.
