Tang tank size requirements

[I'm pulling the cart before the horse with this question because it will probably be January at the earliest before I can put fish in the new tank, but:

What kind / how many Tang's can go into a 90 gallon tank. (Standard dimensions of 48x18x25)

I know that many really need a six foot tank, but I believe many people have had different species do quite well in as small as a 55 gallon.]

[Most of the Zebrasoma or Ctenochaetus species would do fine, but I would only consider having one of them. Most of the Acanthurus sp get waaay too big.

Heres a link so you can look at different species in each family. A lot of Bob's info on this site is outdated or just incorrect at times, concerning size, tank size, ease of keeping. Keep that in mind and post questions about any of the fish you like here.

[As someone who is known to have a tang or two I have to agree with Amanda on this. (she's usually right but we don't have to tell her that)

In particular I would recommend the Kole tang. Not only is it a VERY effective grazer, it doesn't have the endless loop swiming pattern. The short length of your tank wouldn't have as big of an impact on it.]

Lol! Usually??? Tee-hee-hehehe, kidding of course!
and really a tang or two? :Oo:
Hows that PB by the way?

Agreed the Kole or even the Chevron tang would be excellent choices.]

[Thanks for the info.

I think I want to get a yellow tang. Maybe a blue tang as well if they'll tolerate each other.

Both]

[Glad to hear it Scott!

Chris there are about 4 blue tangs off the top of my head, Im guessing you are thinking of a hippo/regal?? Regardless, all of them will outgrow a 90.

The yellow should do great, you may want to wait to add him till last so there wont be any territorial issues.]

[Amanda, This is the one I was considering as a "blue":

They claim 70G for a min size for Paracanthurus hepatus, but that's a retailer saying it, so take it with a grain of salt....
I'm pretty sure this guy is what you'd call a "Hippo tang" so, he's probably out of my league. :so sad:

Shame... he's so pretty.]

[Yep that is the hippo/regal/pallette tang. I have two of them big ole boys and they cover every inch of my 135.
That said, they arent lap swimmers like some other species. So a small might do alright in a 90 for awhile, but it will outgrow it.]

[I guess I can add my vote - I won one of those in the raffle, and it was less than 1" long. That was only four or five months ago, but it is already about 3 1/2" long! VERY fast grow rate, and loves to hide in the rocks.

I wouldn't put one in a 90, these grow too fast, and it wouldn't be long before it outgrew a 90. (I have a 140)]

[FWIW, I saw about 20 baby hippos when I was getting raffle items for our last meeting, but as adorable as they are, they simply looked faded and unhealthy. Due to their condition I passed on them.

However, I could see you putting one of these little guys in your tank but within a year it would have to move on to a larger home.]

[Atlantic Blue tangs do well for grazing and seem to not grow as fast as the pacific ones.. they are a greyish blue and tend to darken up with age ..Kole Tang would be good as well..]

[I had an Atlantic Blue Tang for about 6 months, but he was the bully in my 55g and he had to go. Pretty fish, but he was large and the tank was small.]
