They'll be fine under VHOs. I've had mine out in full light from the MH all day long and they did well. What is key is feeding them regularly, and I mean specific target feeding. I found it easiest to feed them at night when they were open and the fish sleep.
However, shrimp and starfish will be quick to come over and steal a meal.
