Sump set up

I've got a 39 gal glass tank I will be using under my 100 gal tank. It has a bulkhead at one end of the tank for an external return pump. Size 36"L x 17"H x15W. I'm planning on an HOB overflow down to the sump, haven't made up my mind if I want one long overflow or 2 shorter ones. The return pump will be approx 500 gph. Any suggestions for a quiet pump? If more movement is needed later, I will add powerheads to the 100 gal tank. The sump set-up will be DRAINAGE>SKIMMER>REFUGIUM>RETURN . I will be partitioning the tank. What I've read so far says I don't need a skimmer for the first couple of months of starting a new tank. What would be a good size section to have reserved for the "not yet selected" skimmer? Early stage partition measurements - 4" with live rock rubble for the drain, 10" for the undetermined skimmer, 3" for baffels, 6" return section, and the remaining will be the refugium, which will be approx 13" wide. Hope this makes sense to you. Any comments or suggestions?

Thanks again,
David

most the time the skimmer and the drainage is the same space. imo i would do it that way for u cause of size of sump. i also like the return in the middle with your drain t-ing off going to the skimmer section and the fuge with a ball valve so u can put slower flow threw the fuge. then both go the center return. have u looked at Marcs site lots of good info. so your should be like model E but u could play with the sizes of sections u dont want the return too small. the smaller it is the more often u will have to top off cause of evaporation. unless u have a auto top off system witch is is a good idea it keeps your salinity more stable. u might want to find your skimmer would hate for it to not fit. i seen some euro reef skimmers for sale

Model E is what I was thinking about doing. I really like the idea of having my return in the middle with the fuge & drain on either ends, but there is a bulkhead in one end of the sump. After hooking up the return pump, I would have to figure how to plumb in a return line to the middle section. It would either have to go up and over the baffle on the rufugium and back down, or drill a hole in the fuge baffle and run a straight pipe thru the fuge into the return section. Any other suggestions on how to plumb into the middle section would be appreciated.

Thanks

sry didnt think of the hole u said was there. what kind of pump are u going to use? u could just plug the bulk head or just build it inline with return on the end. im just one that likes my pump to be little bigger then some would use and u want the flow threw the fuge slower.

I like the looks of the m and j sumps from Marc's website. I'm leaning towards a Coralife Super Skimmer 125, and a return pump rated about 500 GPH @ 5'. Something along the line of a Mag 7 or 9.5. I've heard the Mag pumps are noisy when used externally. The aquarium will be in our living room, so I would like to keep the sounds as low as possible.

i have never had a coral life skimmer but have heard there not the best if u got it dirt cheap that one thing but i wouldn't buy one new just to have to up grade later. i have always used mag pumps i have my 18 external and its not loud. they will put off little more heat then some other pumps

Hi,
I recommend the Eheim 1260 for your setup. These are the best pumps available imo, they are powerful, have low power consumption, very quiet and extremely dependable. You can use them either submersible or inline.

Cheers,

+1 for Eheim. They are quite and will run practically forever. The only thing quieter are the red dragon$. Mags are cheaper, but you'll definitely hear a mag running--in or out of the water.

I know this is a week late, but I don't get here everyday. But,I just replaced my quiet one 3000 with a Eheim 1262. HOLY COW the Eheim is MUCH stronger. I am glad that I put a ball valve on the output side of the pump, because I need it. My tank is a 6 foot 135 gallon and a 55 gallon sump. The 1262 is more than enough for a return.
