sump question

Ok this is a newbie question im sure but just wanted to ask, im in process of building a new sump because my first rubbermaid project failed to hold together. i have found a glass tank to use and wass curious if it is better to use glass or plexi for the baffles ?? Which one holds better or is it just best to use plexi so you can make the overflow slits on them? Thanks for any advise.

glass would be easier as you can actually silicone them in since silicone will not stick to plexi.

if i cannot find a person to cut glass to spec what would be the option to keep pelxi in place ? Thank you Wes for your responce.

any glass or mirror shop can cut it to what you need, shouldnt be a problem. there was a thread on here about pressure mounting baffles using rubber sealing strips that would work.

Silicone will stick to acrylic enough to hold baffles in place in the sump/fug or you can use the sticky insulation foam strips to hold the baffle in place. Visit Marc's site, I think he has a link showing how to use the foam tape.

started building my refug. Friday afternoon using a 10 gallon. Sunday after making sure the baffle silicone was set, I added mud, all the pumps, returns, etc and all of a sudden I heard a cracking noise. A small live rock fell and cracked the bottom of the tank (the glass is only 1/8) I learned that cracks spread, so all my hard work was for naught. If you can make acrilic (my spelling is as usual....bad) then I would use it. Especially for piece of mind.

Honestly i was thinking about ising acrylic but this just seemed to be a cheaper route, i will try to find a person that can cut some glass to spec for me. Thank you all for your help. And good luck with any future projects. :)

good luck, let us know how it turns out. are you setting up a new tank? we need pics of it all! :)

Well im about two months into this build, new tank, new ground for me, I grew up with a father that was a breeder and had about 1500g of freshwater tanks but never saltwater. So this has been very challenging and very fun at the same time.

yea, doing that hex build right. hows that going, did you figure out the power head placement issues and did we ever get your sign up questions resolved? if you need assistance please feel free to send me a PM

Yes I have pretty much placed one on either side of the back panels facing forward and also have current from my return pump. I have every intention of paying due for membership at the first meeting I can attend. Hopefully the next one . Thank you Wes.

good deal. now is this the sump you said you built yourself in the other thread that you are simply revising or are you making a new one? if you change any plumbing make sure to retest your overflow ability so if the return pump dies it does not drain too much.

(and no pressure on sign up, do it when you feel you want to, i just wanted to make sure you are taken care of)

Koo Wes,

Just want to support the group best i can because I have been taken care of too, as a newbie thee are a hundred questions to ask. i am building a totally new sump froma glass tank i found instead of a rubbermaid, the tank is larger and should not have a problem with the overflow or return plumbing water amounts. Going to go glass this time all the way around.
