Sump/fuge question

Ok i am wondering all the equipment i will need for a 55 gallon sump/fuge for a 150 gallon fowler tank. I got the sump. So im guessing i Need a pump pumping from tank (what would i call that). A skimmer I think im going to go with a euro reef skimmer rated for about 200 gallons. Then myrical mud and fuge light for the refugium (what else i need for fuge?) Then a return pump. Just tell me if im missing enything.

Your system is about the size of mine. Mine is a 135 gallon display and a 55 gallon sump. The water pump is used to move The return pump that I have is a Quiet One 3000. Some people like them...some don't. You could also look at a Mag 7 or an Eheim 1262. Any of those will work assuming your sump is setup with the return pump submerged.

For a skimmer...I am using a EuroReef RS135. It is kinda tall, so make sure that you have enough clearance in your stand.

I wouldn't use miracle mud. A thin layer of sand or bare bottom unless you put in an actual "deep sand bed". The light for the fuge can be almost any light. I use a compact florescent spot light in a cheap reflector thing that you can get at WalMart or Home Depot.

I have my heaters in my sump. I don't know if you thought about heaters yet. Mine are 250watt Jagers x 2.

I also have a couple of "two little fishies" reactors. One for carbon and one for GFO. (granular ferric oxide) A phosphate sponge. These are plumbed via a "T" off of my return line. You don't NEED these to get started, but you will probably WANT them later. Leave room for them.

I also have a auto top off unit from www.autotopoff.com in the sump as well.

That should get you started. I am sure more will chime in with other suggestions. You can get some macro algae for your fuge from members when you are ready, but I would get the tank going and the cycle finshed before you put any macro in there.

If you want to learn more about auto-topoff systems and how it can help, come to this month's meeting on the 13th. The ATO that is discussed will also be given away as a door prize afterward.

I will try and get a recent pic and send it to ya...

Instead of email, I will post it here. Ya never know, if it will benefit (or scare :D ) someone else.

A little bit about it....

The tank is a standard 55 gallon tank. The baffles were cut at a local glass company and silicone was used to put them in.

The skimmer is sitting on a stand to get it in 8 inches of water. The sump water is 14 inches deep.

The return section is a quiet one 3000, 2 jager 250 watt heaters, auto top off, left reactor has gfo and the right has carbon. The reactors are about 35 bucks each.

The other end is a fuge. Currently there are nassarius snails for the shallow sand bed and 4 different types of macro. The light is a clip on reflector with a spiral CF bulb.

There are two drains from the tank. They both come together and then split again. One side feeds the skimmer section and the other side feeds the fuge. The return pump feeds up a 1 inch pipe that splits into 2 loclines into the main tank.

Hope that helps,

Thanks but could you do it were your skimmer area is first then baffels then fuge then baffels then the return pump area. Im having a guy make me one out of my 55 gallon and thats how his is setup. Im guessing you duel overflows with that setup?

Sure, you can do that. If I had to do it again, that is the way I would do it. You are going to get less "bad stuff" in your fuge than I do. That is why I have some snails in my fuge.

Mine is a dual overflow. If you have a dual overflow, both could go to the skimmer. Or, one could go to the fuge and the other to the skimmer. It really isn't going to matter. But, I would put both to the skimmer if it were up to me.
