SUGGESTIONS ON MY NEW SET UP???

I have just set up a 175 bowfront w/ 55 g refuge and a 250 g euro reef skimmer and close to 300 lbs of live rock and no substrate. And 3 150 hqi with 4 96 w compacts. My questions are does any one have or know of a way to speed up the coral line alge growthon the live rock . I would like the rock to be very purple. Next what chemicals should I use I have some b ionic to finish up but am considering new ones ? How to keep calcium leval steady should I have a calcium reactor? also I have some leathers and polyps and zoos how should i feed them and how often to force growth if possible . Thanks for any feedback

Tropic marine calcium powder has worked great for me in growing coraline algae. I like two little fishes 2 part calcium and alkalinity to balance calcium and alkalinity but on a big tank that can get expensive. I was just starting to look at other alternatives but now I'm downsizing,so i'll probably stay with 2 parts.

I have heard of EXCELLENT results with individuals using Purple-Up.

I bought a bottle last week and have been dosing daily as recommended, and will be posting my results after a month or two. Coralline can only grow so fast... But so far after 1 week I can already see a small increase in the growth rate.

My tank is about 2 months old. I am testing this on my 100g Reef. Pictures and more info on the tank can be found in my signature below.

In a tank with balanced water chemistry i.e ca/alk/mg, coralline algae will grow just fine. Be carefull with additives such as purple up as it has a lot of calcium, if you are also dosing two part you can throw your balance off if you don't pay attention. Not sure why you are in such a rush....patience is the key to success in this hobby. :)

Cheers,

You may need to be careful with purple up. I know a member that started having problems after he started using it. He said they think it was adding iodine to his water plus he was dosing it.

Coraline seems to prefer to grow on my glass instead of my rocks.

when i used purple up it threw my ca out of whack (too high)

i love the tropic marine bio calcium the only downside to that stuff is on a new tank or when u are trying to get the calcium up u have to use a lot of it. but it will grow coraline like no other. i like it a little better than the puprle up. all that is is calcium and iodide. were as tropic marin as all the trace elements in it. u can try using pickaling lime if u want to get the calcium up but u do need to test ur water when useuing any of the products.

I personally never use purple up or anything else to rush the coralline. Determine how you will maintain your Ca / Mg levels longterm, and begin your maintenance now. Obviously your tank demands will change, but starting a regular program now will ease your ability to maintain it in the future.

I think i will be patient and focus on keeping the level steady Thanks for all the help. Another thought is it better to be using a two part or using each individual chemical?

if all you have is softys leave the mhl off and use the pcs .coralin will grow faster

just for my knowledge can you tell me why that works? said:
There are several different types of corraline(pink, purple, red, plating, etc.), a lot are found in lower light region's but there are also some found in higher light region's. It depend's on the area your LR is from, so if you have several different LR types, the chance of having multiple types of corraline algae is increased. You can introduce different types by adding cured pieces from different regions/tanks as well as getting scrapings from multiple folks. They also sell that stuff somewhere I'm sure at places like garf.com. Her's a link with info as well. http://www.garf.org/coralline.html

You got that thing packed with rock, looks like my current setup . 150's might too weak on a 28" depth. Depending on how heavily you're looking to stock that thing, you may get away with using 2 part for now, b-ionic is the best imo. One other thing you will need to dose is magnesium separately.

I figured that the rock was stacked so thick that the lights would be ok and they came with the tank, but what would you suggest?

I rushed my coralline algae with elevated calcium, alkalinity, and a some scrapings from one of Pete's tanks.

Every time I spend all evening scraping the stuff off the glass with a credit card, I swear I want to invent a time machine so I can go back and kick myself. Hard.
