Suggestions needed

[I've finally got my tank back up and I need suggestions for your guys.
My setup currently has 18in 50/50 coralife only 15 watts.
I just purchased a 2X36W Power Compact retro fit kit with 2 new Helios Ultra Grow lamps 12000k/8000k on ebay. Is this enough lighting for most anaemones and hardy corals?

As far as water movement, I have one power head (i'm not sure of the output) and I have a H.O.B Tetratec PF150 (moves 150 gallons/hr) Mechanical, chemical & biological filter, about 20 lbs of Fiji. Is this enough movement for most hardy corals??

The only thing in my tank right now are 2 green chromis, 1 clown and 50 Nassarious Obsoleta snails. (within 5 minutes of adding the snails, they had already started attacking the algea on the glass and the hair algea on the rock. after 18hrs in the tank- there is virtually no algea on the glass)

I was told that the kit I purchased on ebay was not bright enough for anenomes so, if I go with 2x65w both actinic instead of 2X36W Ultra Grow lamps 12000k/8000k or should I just go with both of them??

ANY AND ALL SUGGESTIONS / HELP is appreciated]

[What size tank is that? When I had my 29g running, I had 3x55w PCs and my BTA seemed to do well.

That one snail sure looks like a whelk to me.

You really need a tank that has been set up long enough to become established before adding an anemone. They aren't an easy creature like mushrooms. I recommend you wait a year, but I know you don't want to hear that.]

Waiting a year would not be a major issue to me. My goal at the moment is to try to purchase the right equipment now. I have no plans on doing much coral at the moment until I get myself a little more familiar with their care.
As far as the snail... I'm not 100% sure myself. I bought a lot of them on ebay. If it is a whelk, I wouldn't know. But I dont think it is.. Reading the link you just sent me, these snails move rather quicker than any other snail I've seen.]

[The shell may prove to be a nassarius obselleta (sp?), which is okay. The trunk on that guy looked like one of the bad ones. Look closely at yours when you get chance. Does it look like it has been tatooed? If so, it would be in the whelk family, which I learned means 'clam-eater'. I don't have any more in my tank, but I have lots of nassarius in my sand bed.]

[That snail is a N. obsoleta, their trunks are not as "clean" looking as the other nass I have. They clean up all the mysis in my horse tank (thankfully! ) and many have noted that they eat cyano and other algaes.

For your tank's flow, it is important to not have any dead spots. If you see food settling in specific places, that is a good indicator for more flow. Depending on the size of this tank, ans the PH you currently have in there you may have plenty. If you need to add some flow, a closed loop or a maxi jet 600 or 900 should help.

You can start with some easier corals while yout tank matures. I have all kinds of softies in my PC tank.]

[Marc... I was reading what you had on your site about the nassarius snails sticking their trunks through the sand bed. Well I just happened to catch one a couple of weeks ago and snapped a few pics. This picture is actually of a "Tonga Dove Snail" - atleast that's what the LFS called them, but have yet to find any info on them under this name. They are much larger than my "normal" nassarius snails, about 1/4-1/2 inch. I haven't had any trouble with them at all...they never leave the sand bed and have done an excellent job cleaning up uneaten food. As soon as someting hits the sand bed around one of them you'll see them pop right up to snatch it. Otherwise they stayed submerged until lights out.]

[What is a good cleanup crew for a 12g Nano Cube? Dr. Foster has packages but they start at 30g...do I just divide by 2?

Thanks,

Rick]

[Hi Rick, I would just buy your cleanup crew as needed from a LFS. I use 5 snails, 2 red leg hermits, 3 blue leg hermits(I would go with redlegs for all if did it again), 1 cleaner shrimp and 1 peperment shrimp. Usally by the time you pay shipping you will be around the same price and you will know your stuff is alive. I originally bought Mex turbo snails but moved all of them to my 75 as they kept knocking over everything and have a mix of snails from Exotic Aquatics now but no turbos :) . good luck. If you have lfs close I would only buy your clean up crew as needed. A few snails at a time.
Good luck.]

[I good HOB protein skimmer would be a good piece of equipment to purchase DJR. Also, the idea with hiding the powerhead is nice and all, and i tried it, but you need to clean them occasionally, and sometimes the just stop working on you and you need to have access to them. So as long as you dont mind moving the rock to get to it, i guess it will work.]
