Starting over from an empty tank... - Need some stocking suggestions

[Here we go...Got my sump/fuge going last night. Made it through the night without having to mop the floor. On pins and needles till I get home though!

I am getting away from the Triggers and going to a more community set-up. No corals, just shrimp, crabs, starfish, etc, and "community" fish. My question is...

What type of critters would be ideal for the fuge? The fuge area is about one cubic foot. I know I will have sand, LR, and Caulerpa, but what other critters are the "must have" for a fuge. I will have a lot of small hermits and snails in the main tank. Should I put them in the fuge also?

What do you have in your fuge?]

[Hi have a Crown Conch in mine that I never see. It stays submerged and cleans the sand as he stirs it.

In the other one, I have a Tigertail cucumber who's doing a good job as well.

I do like a few snails in there to clean the glass, but you need to make sure it can't get to the next section of your sump and clog up your return pump's inlet with its shell.]

[Is that all you have? This is what I was thinking about...

2-3 red/blue hermits
a few snails for the glass
a few snails for the sand bed
a brittle star, apparently they are good scavengers

Correct me if I am wrong, but the fuge will also act as a "living" mechanical filter for the stuff that gets past the skimmer. So there should be some critters in there to take care of the left overs.

Thanks for the input.
Mike]

[You need very little in the refugium besides macro algae, some sand and a light. Slower flow is preferred. The bugs you are hoping to propagate need to be in a predator-free zone.

There is no benefit in hermits in the fuge. And don't get a sand sifting star as it will eat the very bugs you hope to generate.]
