Stand in progress

[My stand is coming along nicely. I'm only working on it alittle each evening then moving to resealing the tank. Since reefcentral won't let you link to the images, here is my gallery:

Reefcentral Gallery

Any comments or words of advise would be appreciated. The top is only setting on the legs for now. It gets attached tonight.]

[I should have known youd have something to say Vincent :D

I'm sure it's overbuilt, but a lot of wood makes the wife a little more at-ease with "me" building it :p Just wait till she has to help me move it ]

[Thanks Marc! PM or email me your address and I will cut you a check for the floats. You can either hold them till the next meeting or add shipping to the amount and send them to me. I don't think I'll be over in your neck of the woods for quit some time :( I don't like owing someone money ]

[I added some more pics to the gallery. The tank is being leak tested, while the stand is being structurally tested.

You can see the overflow from Tranquil Scapes in the pics.]

[I'm going to try and match the existing furniture I have. It's a antique pine color with a hint of brown in the grain. It's a lot like an Antique Wax, but I'm not having much luck finding antique wax anywhere around here. It's alot like the Scrub Pine finish here:

All my furniture is pine, shich is why I went with pine instead of oak or birch.]

[Brett,

Furniture in the Raw in Plano carries the General Finishes line, if that's what you are looking for. They might have that wax. Have you been to Woodcraft in Addison, or Rockler in Mesquite? They also might have what you are looking for. Another alternative is some of the local antique malls, they all seem to carry some brand of antique wax or another. FWIW though, just using a wax will not provide a very durable finish for your stand.

If you want to bring some pine over to my place, we could try some of the brown wax I have to see if you like it. I've also got a pretty decent selection of dyes and stains to play with.]

[I ended up getting Briwax Rustic Pine antique wax from Furniture in the Raw in Garland.. It matches all my furniture perfectly. I'm not to worried about the durability of the wax finish. I designed the stand and canopy so most of the splashing and spills should be contained within the canopy and stand interior, which is sealed with 2 coats of Kilz original and 2 coats of Gloss White enamel. Actually, that's what I'm in the process of doing now. The advantage of the wax is being able to touch up very easily if something happens.]

[Bret,

Briwax is a good wax for certain applications. If you got the version that has Toulene in it, be very careful not to use it on top of or under any other new finishes(like with your other furniture). The Briwax with Toulene is primarily intended for use on restoring old finishes such as on antiques etc, and in that capacity does very well. With noncured new finishes less than a year old, the toulene version has the ability to really muck up a finish by dissolving it...

Just be aware that wax, while it looks great, is a very soft finish and really provides zero protection against water, scratches etc... The result is that while it's easily repaired, you may end up repairing it alot.

There are other products that are also easily repaired, such as the Waterlux product line(and they have a marine varnish), that offer a higher degree of protection. A moot point I guess.

I'm glad it matches well!! Do you have any updated pics?]

[I'm still working on everything, so I haven't uploaded any new pics. Being gone on weekends hasn't helped my plans any either. I'll be gone this weekend again  I'm going to try to at least finish the stand and get it inside before I leave. I still have to build the doors, but I'll try and get pics without the doors at least.

The Briwax I got does have Toluene in it. It smells good :p As long as it is being reapplied over Briwax it is fine. I spot tested it on a corner of one of my tables and it seemed to work allright. It actually "melts" the existing finish and blends in with it. That toluene is some fun stuff:)]

[I've uploaded some more pics in the Reefcentral Gallery:

I still have to do the doors and finish the canopy, but it's coming along nicely. The wife was actually excited about the way it is turning out. That's the first bit of excitement I've noticed towards my new found hobby :so sad:]

[I know that feeling. Mine was in doubt until she saw Marc's tanks in person. Since she has been wanting to go to the store and look at frags, rock, fish, etc... Life is good again. :D]

[Bret,

Looking good! I wish I was making that kind of progress on my stand. Looking forward to seeing it finished.]
