Staining Canopy

Hello:

I just finished building a canopy and now want to stain it. Any concerns with oil based finishes so long at they are properly cured? Anyone know if Oceanic etc use water vs. oil finishes.

you should be able to use water based stains and then use a eurathane sealer/clear coat. I've built several stands, canopies, etc and they haven't had any issues with water absorbing into the wood

I was hoping someone might have experiance with oil based stains and finishes. Water based finishes will not flex and I believe the heat from the warming of the wood due to the lights will case it to crack.

I am far, far from an expert, but I have built 3 canopies all which used water-based stain covered with polyurathane and have not had any problems with cracking due to heat. Of course the oldest one of these is only 3 years old, so perhaps for very long term use, the issue might arise.

I believe I have heard of folks using oil based stains (and paints for that matter) with a good sealing coat on top, but I don't have any direct experience.

Just my .02

Good luck

i used an oil based stain on my stand and canopy...but used killz latex primer to seal th inside the canopy and stand
