squamosa clam splitting open

The mantle is about to tear because the front of the shell has split open. The pic is taken right after I moved him from the sand to a top high point on the rock closer to the lighting. I haven’t seen any Pyramillid snails or holes in the mantle or shell that I have observed. For what its worth I do have a 12-line wrasse that I thought should eat those type of snails or parasites. Is it to late to save her or is there a treatment like fresh water dip etc???

bummer man...bad luck lately huh...why'd you move it, didnt it use to be on the rocks and it moved down there on its own? was it looking bad on the sand? was it hard to move, maybe you hurt its pad that attaches it to stuff. does it still close up?

no kinding last seven days of ****. The clam has probably been in the sand for about 3 months now, the first month it was jumping off the rock so I moved it down there and it looked good up until about the last week.

edit
It was sensitive to the light.

No parm fluctuations or system changes. Just lost the two fish one stuck on the Koralia and the other was terrorized by the fox face. First fish lost since in six months.

henry, you said the clam looked bad, why did the clam look bad last week?

matt, what causes gaping?

Thanks for diagnoses Matt that gets me started on researching what others have done. I just read similiar cases so far maybe an viral/bacteria or poor lighting, so the moving it to the top may help a little very little. and the wish for for more lighting moves up the long list also.

metal halides, METAL HALIDES, [METAL HALIDES!]

hehe, have to pester you about that, i know you are on the fence about more T5's of these, so anything i can do to confuse, jk

good luck with that man...

ok, random thought, but would putting something against the shell on one side to try and support it help, not sure, havnt read anywhere about it, havnt read too much on clams period, its why i dont have one, but just a thought, if it is having issues closing and is stretching too far open, thought something to relieve the pressure and stress may help...???

Please post the pic and all perameters in the "clam emergency" forum on www.clamsdirect.com. Chris is a moderator and he will reply promptly. He is very knowledgable. If you are not running carbon do so as fast as you can, and not just in a bag in the sump. It need to have a lot of water moving through the carbon. Phosban reactors work very well.

It's not to late yet. Don't give up. Don't move the clam again it will only stress it more.

I wish you the best of luck!!

Do not do a fw dip. It will stress it more. Just wait for Chris to respond. They recomend fw dips for pm as a last resort, but it is very stressful on the clam.

Boy I hate to lose the animals had him for about 3 months and had some good growth about 2 1/4" ridges and just went down hill fast.
