Sponge help

Sad story short, my sponge was mishandled and exposed to air if only for a few seconds. The tips are already dead. White tufts at the ends in this photo.

Any way to salvage this? Should I cut off the white parts and hope for the best? I don't want a dead animal polluting the tank.

I don't really know the answer, but I believe your best bet it to trim off the dead areas to limit it spreading.
