Splitting in 3?

I have never heard of an anemone splitting in 3 at one time.

I had a fairly large anemone (about 12-15 inches across when opened up), and he just got small one day, which worried me, and poof, split into 3...

Is that normal?

It's not that unusual, especially for a large nem like that. We had a 18" green nem do that on more than one occasion.

Good to know.

I have heard conflicting explanations for splitting...some say they split when the environment is good, some say they split when its bad to maximize survivability...

Yeah... Sometimes they split when you plunge a knife through 'em even...

There's a lot we don't know about these critters... That's part of what draws me to 'em...

Congrats Eugene on your trifecta :). As Scott and Brian had said it is not unusual but not common. Did you performa water change or change any parameter in the days before the split?

No, to be honest I have been pretty lazy lately with the water changes...typically 15% once every 2-3 weeks.

ORP has been climbing though, and all levels are at 0...although that is no excuse...I really shouldn't be waiting that long between water changes.

Well then there goes that theory... Then it's a mystery :D

It just makes me sad, because that was almost a centerpiece to the tank. :/

Most believe that splitting occurs under both sets of conditions. Seed bearing plants seem to produce more seeds under dire conditions, and also under optimum conditions. Guess one should never question mother nature. She assures continuance during hard times by producing more seeds, and also under good times.
