Spiny urchins - Hitchhikers

[My 75 was cycled early Nov and has about 90lbs LR most being FloridaLiveRock. A few weeks ago I noticed a couple black long spinned sea urchins (which look cool) The 2 have increased in size 2 cm to about 3-5cm accross including spines in the weeks since I first noticed them. I am also seeing a few smaller ones all less than 2cm accross. I read that urchines have a tendancy to knock over corals in the display and eat coraline. I dont have much corals yet(a few nice frags from a couple of other DFWMAS members, TYTYTY) but mostly just rock. And so far the Hermits and the turbos knock over everything anyway. My tank is producing corline pretty fast so I don't feel the 7 maybe urchines are hurting my tank yet. but should I attempt to relocate them all to my sump or can I safely leave a few in the display?

Note: Its amazing to me that after the cycles giant amonia spike how much hitchhiking live stock survived and that 2 months later I am just seeing some of them for the first time. Sea stars, sea urchines, clams and muscles though not the giant good looking ones but neat all the same ,( 1 manta shrimp I know about) I saved him from the shipping crate. Lots and lots of sponges(orange red and purple(darkred) of many types)]

[My two hitch hiker Mine Urchins are still alive after 2 1/2 years.

They got to be about 3 to 4 inches across. They have been living in my refuge for over a year. I saw one leterally lift the side of a huge base rock. unbeliveble strenth. They had to be out of the main tank or they would tare it up.

good Luck

Its great you got free live stock. Watch out for a clicking noise coming form your tank at night..]

[If you could post a picture of you hitchhikers, that would be great. They might be diadema urchins, and they are known to eat green hair algae.

If you come to one of our meetings and want to give me one, I'll be happy to accept because they are beautiful. This is the one in my refugium currently:

[Sure thing Marc, If you want one or two I'll bring them to the next meeting. Here's two pic's from the right side of the tank.

[That would be great. They are really pretty animals. I have a large one in my son's tank.]
