Something is growing???

Okay, I just recently placed new Ocean Direct sand into the tank (new set up) and placed 50 lbs of base rock and 4 pieces of live figi rock, all last week. Today, I noticed this growing onto the base rock near the bottom. I just started cycling the tank but I can't imagine something is growing in there already. I have no lights either yet.

This object sways back and forth with the current and is soft to the touch. What is this? Is it bad and should I remove it?

Hard to tell from the photo. The only thing I've seen close to that is when I cycled both of my 90s, after adding some biomass like a dead fish, shrimp, etc. it was encased in a white foul smelling covering that looks similar to that. Did you, or someone else add something to the tank, or a dead hitchhiker on the rock?

Sounds like what I experienced then. My advice would be to leave it alone. The smell alone almost make me barf when I fished mine out. :p

Eventually. If there is still a solid mass say 2 weeks into your cycle you can remove it. Depends on how long you want a steady but dead source of ammonia to drive the bacteria. I wouldn't leave anything dead in the tank when you are ready to add fish.
