Snails

I have been looking at different snail species to add to my tank. I already have Astrea and Black Turbo snails. I have had nassarius vibex and may get a few again. I am also thinking about Dwarf Cerith.

What kinds of snails have you liked the best? And where is a good place to get snails?

I have looked at ReefCleaners, Melev's Identification, liveaquaria.

There are all kinds of snails available. Some of my favorites are the Red Footed Mexican Turbo and the Bumble Bee snail. Ones I buy regularly are Astrea, Cerith. Nerites are pretty and active too.

Reeftopia and KeysCritters both sell snails online, and are used by many members here on DFWMAS.

I just placed my order with Reeftopia. They have a nice variety. I am going with florida ceriths, nerites, emerald crab, one star snail, lettuce nudibranch, and nassarius vibex.

I thought bumble bee snails prey on other snails?

I always have bumble bee snails in my tank. I had problems with manjos and they will actually eat it but not all bumble snails will do this. Out of the 10 - 15 that I have only 5 of them would do it. I havnt seen any of them go after other snails unless they were already dead.

I had a bumblebee snail left over from my 2007 tank. It was one of only a handful of survivor snails but I accidentally forgot to pick it off the live rock that I put in fresh water for 2 days to kill hydroids, so it died.

I got a new shipment of nerite snails. They seem to do well at cleaning. The cerith snails have reproduced and are also doing a good job.

I ended up putting 3 black turbo snails in my HOB refugium and that has helped a lot.

Not that anyone would dig up an old post but I try to follow up with new information on old posts.

Of the snails I have purchased in the last year I have observed the following:

2 of 18 Astrea snails alive
2 of 3 star snails alive
3 of 12 black turbo snails alive, several crawled out of tank
8 of 12 nassarius snails alive
8 of 12 cerith snails alive
7 of 12 nerite snails alive, one crawled out of tank

The best bang for the buck in my humble opinion are... drum roll please.

Tiger Trochus - A little expensive for snails but eats a ton, is pretty, reproduces in the tank (I just found several babies in my 300) and they flip themselves back over. Something the astreas, turbos etc do not do.

Long Shell Ceriths - The Caribbean variety for their reproduction, they lay eggs all over the place and they get in the nooks and crannies. They are also cheap in bulk.

Margarita Snails - Eat just about everything and are cost effective...

I would like to get either some trochus or some turban snails. Is one better than the other? They are pricey snails but several people have recommended them.

If the red foots are like regular turbo snails they will eat algae on anything.

I did finally get 3 trochus snails and they are doing great.

As of today I have left:

1 trochus snail- These are great snails and worth the price
1 star snail - I like these and they are worth the price
1 black turbo snail - These were great except they did not survive a year
Zero Astrea - good riddance
several nerite - These are great and do survive
a few cerith snails - These are great but not many survived a year. Maybe they were too good.
Nassarius Vibex - Only a few survive. I don't know why more don't survive, maybe lack of food.
