Small Birdsnest

Should I frag this coral? It started turning white since the first day I got it. I put it in a high flow area with lots of light, but it seems to be getting worse everyday. Here is a pic...

It may be getting too much light. What is it under and how far? Chris said:
Not sure because I got it from another member at the swap, but I bet I can find out.

:D I'm refering to the bleaching on the top left side of the coral.

Olaggie - It's in the center of my tank about half way down and it's actually under the glass brace, so I would presume the lighting is OK. I will just have to get some more info on it past location.

Good point Soji, you are talking about the lightening of the top left side of the coral right, not just the tips.

Chris

Is it getting heavy flow on that left side? Could be irritating the coral. Doesn't sound like it's getting too much light to me.

You can see the location here... (It's right next to the coco worm) From watching the flow it seems to be equal on both sides from the wavemaker.

We bought a birdsnest frag that looks almost exactly the same. It was labelled "pink birdsnest". When we got it home over the next few days the polyps turned lighter and became pink. The tips are near white but the rest is pink. Most parts that looked almost white have darkened now to a pink color.

I suppose the frag came from a part of the next that didn't get much light, and as soon as it was exposed colored right up.

Oh by the way I'm jealous of your tank too :)

Bill it does look like it is bleaching out a bit. For reference I only have VHO lighting and medium flow and it seems to be healthy and growing great.

I don't know enough about SPS to give you any advise though. All I know is birdnest is one of the hardier and accept lower light and flow than most SPS, but should be fine in high light and flow.

I got it from Kevin (chvytrucks) and I'm not sure who he got it from so maybe it's been relocated a couple of times. :?

I have gotten the best coloration from my pink birdsnest at the bottom front corner of my tank. It seems to not be a light hog at all. Mine would lighten up alot if it was moved higher.

I wouldn't move it. I think the stress from the events leading up to the swap, during the swap, the trip home and the acclimation can cause them to lose some color.

I hope it will be okay. All of mine are doing fine so far.

Bill,
I think you have the direction 180 degrees turned from where i had it.
it was 22 inches under the water and in between 2 250 de 10k ushios that are 20 inches apart. with 220 vho. My photo period was actincs on 11:30 am halides on at 1pm, halides off at 9:10, actinics off at 10:20

its was maroon with purple/blue polyps in my tank, and i had it for over 6 months with good tight growth. Last time it was fragged was 2 mos ago.

water flow was moderate and it got hit from both sides by the wavebox.

Hope this helps.

Feel Free to call BS at anytime, but I think this coral actually grew a lot in one week! Let me know if I'm just seeing things..... :? I'm counting lots of new tips and longer branches. That's nuts!
