recently i have notice slime building up on the surface of my water. if i stick my hand in it it will stick to my hand like snot( i did a water change and it came back in about 3 or four days). what is this stuff, and how do i get rid of it.
My nano tank used to get it... It's because there's no surface agitation. Not sure what it is exactly but I believe its dissolved organic matter. Aim a powerhead towards the water line. Leaving the slime there will impact the amount of light going through and the oxygen levels. Having a skimmer will also reduce the amount of schtuff floating around.
Also, depending on what type of skimmer you have, if you are using one, you can usually get an add on, that will "skim" the surface of the water and remove it...
It's hard to say. If you have a surface skimmer (overflow) that would help. I used to have one even with an overflow, but moving you powerhead or whatever surface agitator to push water to your overflow that may help. For me, they seemed to create a kind of swirling motion that would allow surface "scum" to build. So I repositioned them to agitate the surface and break up the "scum". This seemed to work well. I don't have the problem anymore.
