Skimmers-Any particular ones to stay away from??

Trying to get a 90 gal set-up and functional, and about to start buying the required items. Want to know what you feel the best quality skimmers are, and the ones that are not so good, so I don't buy junk.

Thanks in advance.

Seaclone...

they work, but not when they're too much bio load. The lowest cost of skimmer that I like is CPR bak pak. You can find them for about $ 100-$ 150 and they work very very well.

I am going to be looking for one that goes in the fuge, not hang on...My budget is $200 or less..the less the better ;-).(Or is that not going to get me a good piece of equipment?)

Thanks again!

I'm new to the hobby, but when I bought mine I read "ALOT" of reviews on them. I bought the ASM G2 for my 80gal and like it. Euroreef is top of the line but you pay for it. With ASM you seem to get the most bang for your bucks.

Veterans - If I'm off on this please correct me, Just my 2 cents worth

Octopus skimmers seem to be trying to make a name for theirselves too. I have read people seem to like them.

IMO: ASM

One's worth buying: Euro-Reef, ASM, Aqua C.

One to avoid: Seaclone

Thanks....I'll start researching the ones listed, and run my decision by "The Educated Board" before I make a purchase.

Thanks again for feedback!

BrentE,
The best Low cost best performance one I've used was the CPR Backpack. I have 2 other skimmers ( yes one's a seaclone) that I've run and neither have given me the reliability or the effectiveness of the backpack. For my 120 I was actually considering making a clone of the backpack only Supersizing it. It's a very simple design, easy to clean and maintain and works like a champ. The ONLY downside is it's a Hang on back Skimmer.
The ASM skimmers are probably the best I've seen for in sump application though I've really not played around with many.
My BEST recommendation is to get a skimmer that is 1 "size up" from what you need. To my knowledge, you cant overskim but it's bad to underskim.

I picked up an ASM G4 a few weeks ago for 120.00, as the person was doing a complete upgrade and didnt want to sell it to the store for nothing. Best skimmer I have had, hands down.

Worst skimmer I ever had was a SeaClone, it didnt skim anything really. I think I could have done better with a plastic tube with a cup glued to the the top and me blowing on a flex hose through an airstone.

Just my two cents, but stay away from SeaClone.

Now I thought that was funny!

Recently bought an Octopus NW-150 for my 105g and love it. It's working way better than my Berlin Turbo XL ever did.

If I get to vote... and most people don't let me vote.. I would say for the money/efficeny and space I really like my ASM G3. Now from what I have read the Octopus is very simular in design so I do not think there would be much difference in performance...

Any feelings on the proclear 750-75150? I visited EA to get started and was essentially handed it and a Proclear Wet/dry sump... It seems to do a decent job... I utilize the drain hose so as to reduce the need to empty the cup... I do take the cup out monthly and scrub it clean of all the nasties...
