skimmer placement vs. water level

I got a new pump for my skimmer. The manufacturer said I would have to raise the skimmer up in the sump to where it runs at 8 inches of water, not the current 10 inches. My question is what is the purpose for raising the skimmer? I put the new pump on and it's in 10 inches of water but going crazy flowing out. Don't know if it will adjust soon or not. The water has not been skimmed hardly at all in a month because of pump issues.

Should I raise the skimmer up in the sump or wait to see if it calms down on its own? I adjusted it to wide open setting. I just don't understand the reasoning of raising it up.

Hi Kay!

I believe that it is running out because it is designed to be standing in 8 inches of water instead of the 10 inches you have now. The skimmer is designed so that the water is pumped up the column to a certain level that will efficiently remove waste from the water. If you stood the skimmer in 6 inches of water, the pump would likely not be able to pump the water high enough in the column to effect skimming.

My skimmer adjusts a different way. The outlet tube, which comes straight up from the base of the skimmer, is lengthened, or shortened to cause the water to rise to the proper height in the skimmer column.

I hope I have helped at least a little with my explanation! This is my understanding of how it works.

So if I raise the skimmer up in the sump it will somehow throttle it down?

The skimmer came with two Sicce pumps which I haven't been happy with, they're always breaking down. So I ordered another pump from the manufacturer of the skimmer and he said I'd have to raise the skimmer up in my sump for this pump to work.

How do you raise the skimmer up? I have a plate under it now but that's only giving me an inch. If I raise it more, won't I have to also raise the pump that sits beside it?
I also have that pipe that you can adjust but I have it on the open setting, which lowers the water level the most.

Make a stand out of acrylic or eggcrate is the easiest way to do it

Thanks. Egg crate's a good idea. I may have some out in the garage. But do you think that's what's causing the overflow, is the thing needs to be raised up?

What's happening is your new pumps are more efficient it doesnt need the water to sit higher inside the skimmer to start the foam head to reach the top of the skimmer. Your new pumps prob either draw in more air or pump more water or maybe combo of the two

So instead of a level of 10" of water inside the skimmer to get the foam to get going you are only need 8" of water inside the skimmer

Which pumps did you go with

I switched from 2 Sicce 2500's to 1 Eskoll 1500, and they modified it to fit the skimmer. And I plugged the other hole for the second Sicce.

I raised the skimmer up 2 inches and it's working a lot better. I have to kink the hose a little to cut down on the air going in there or it's still too high. Hope that's not bad, but there's still plenty of air going into the skimmer. As the pump breaks in I might have to adjust that. Thanks for advice.

Kay if you need to get an air line tubing valve that way you can fine tune it but prob after couple days it will stable out.
