Skimmer palcement

[I did not want to hijack the other skimmer thread so I will post the question here...."I was wondering if a skimmer is placed outside the sump..ie a ETSS skimmer...is the height of the skimmer placement a factor in its performance? I have the bottom of my etss clone level to the top of my sump so the 1 1/2" pipe goes over the top and down into the sump. would raising? lowering? my skimmer help its efficiency?"

I guess you can not edit a description?]

[Certainly to some extent because of the pump. If your skimmer is above sump you will have some head pressure whereas if it is even there would be very little. It shouldn't make a huge difference but will make some!]

[I was told but ant ETSS tech person that the top of the water outlet on the gate valve should be about 1" - 2" below the water surface. Mine is about 2" below and seems to be working fine.]

[I am getting skimate, but it seems to collect at the top of the reaction chamber in the collection cup. very little spills over into the collection cup or into the bucket I have the tube running to from there. my drainline from the gate valve is a good 10" above the waterline in my sump. Maybe thats the probllem? the pump is setting right next to the skimmer and fed with a 1" flex line (no elbows)]

I am running the ETSS 600 Pro with a pressure rated Blueline 40.

tx29fan:
Has your skimmer been set up for a while? I would not think that having it above the water line would be a problem at all. What model skimmer and pump are you running.

[Sounds like you are running the water level a little low. Try closing the gate valve slightly till you get the water level up a bit.

The only thing that I think having the gate valve higher will cause a problem with is lack of backpressure from the sump water if you were depending on that to keep the skimmer water level consistent. Since you have a gate valve though you can adjust it to supply the proper amount of backpressure to keep the water level consistent instead of depending on the sump.]

[Its an etss 800 and fed by a Gen-X Mak iv setting next to it with no elbows between it and the skimmer. When I raise the water level in the skimmer I get less bubbles and even less skimate.]

[Do you have the manual for your skimmer? In mine it says that etss skimmers are opposite other skimmers when you change the water level. When you lower the water level it actually lets in more air which creates more bubbles therefore raising the production of skimmate. How many bio balls are you running in your tower(s)?]
