skimmer help

im in need of a new skimmer...some say asmg2 some say octopus ..im running a 120 reef with a 40 gal fuge..thanks for any advice..also would liek the skimemr to be a in sump style

It really depends on how much foot print space you have in your sump for the skimmer your looking at. Measure that space and then see if the ones your considering will fit. I like Octopus skimmers but there are alot others. Depends also on your budget.

i have about 17 in footprint space... and have 300.00 to spend.. i was looking at octopus recir skimmers....few ppl said there real noisy.. i want the biggest i can get for 300 as far a rating go..

From personal experience I can say that I would save and buy the best skimmer possible. When I started to set up my 125g tank about 8 months ago , I threw away $100.00 on a cheap skimmer (didn't know that at the time), then forked out another $200.00 for my Octopus. Good skimmer but just good enough for my set up. Now I'm upgrading ( tank is fish heavy), that's $300.00 thus far !! We spend so much on this hobby on odds and ends . A skimmer for our systems should really be top notch. It's 1 of the most important filtration parts in our tanks.

Not saying you can't get a good skimmer for $300, just that you won't regret going bigger and better based on tank and inhabitants (future ones too) rather than available funds at present time.I should have listened to what they always say "OVERSIZE". Just my experiece and advice.....but I'm no expert.

very good point!! i agree.. i am researching as much as i can...what kind of skimemr are you going to go with now?? i went to bulkreefsupply and read some great reviews about bubble magus....i was looking at the model for 250 gal ratings...thanks as always for all the help!

Looking to get a Royal Exclusiv Alpha 170 rated for up to 200g tanks. Anyone have one of these and can give me some feedback? They look to be great skimmers.

+1 on the SWC 160. Another one to look at would be the reef octopus SRO XP1000SSS. It's available at BRS but sold out right now. I know if I had 300 for a new skimmer, that's what I would have.

i will let ya know.. it will be in today... i am looking for another skimmer for a frag tank i just setup... has anyone ever used a pro clear skimmer and if so how did ya like it?

Check out I-tech skimmers. I had an octopus skimmer great bang for the buck. But I-tech will run circles around octopus skimmers

I wouldn't say that I-tech can run circles around Octo skimmers. Have you ran a SRO? The bubble blaster is one heck of a pump and very efficient. My SRO XP 2000 pulls 23watts and pulls the gunk out of my heavily stocked 120g. Don't get me wrong, it looks like a nice skimmer.

Yeah I ran the reef octopus with bubble blaster I was one of the first in dallas to run one.

I feel ashamed to admit it, but I run a pro clear 150 on my 90 gallon. Although I don't know why I should feel so, as my system is running just fine as an SPS dominant, medium-fish load tank. Seems like everybody else has a pimp skimmer, but I'm on a reefin' budget.

I feel like the pro clear is pretty easy to set and forget. It's consistent on pulling out waste and doesn't seem too finicky. It doesn't freak when I use epoxy to mount anything, etc. It does seem to skim just a bit wet most of the time, but I'm not one of those who needs a thick, black skimmate to feel secure. I don't have any issues with nitrates. My fish stock includes a harem of 4 lyretail anthias, so I feed twice daily.

All this being said, I do plan on upgrading to either the SWC 160 or reef octopus SRO XP1000SSS as I mentioned earlier in the thread, just so I can have a fancy new cone skimmer that's the cat's pajamas these days.

got the skimmer hooked up(octopus nwb 200 8 in recir)...glad i have a 40 gallon breader cuz it eats up alot of roombut this thing is skimming like crazy for now...i prob need to look for a small feed pump around 500-600 gph im using a mag 9.5 ...anyway so far i love it... may look for a smallwer one for my frag tank

I would run a maxijet utility pump for it it's going to have a smaller foot print and doesn't create so much heat. I think running a 9.5 is a little to big the reconmended is 500gph so something about a 700 would be good just run a ball cable on it so you can tune the input

thats what i was thinking.... may try a rio 1700 rated for 634 gph (i think) will keep a eye on it ..ran the 9.5 cuz thats what was laying around .skimming real good!
