Skimmate locker -vs- DIY Setup

I have a very odd question.

Is there any added benefit of a skimmate locker other than trapping the smell?

I have a DIY gallon container that I used with my old setup as a skimmate locker without being airtight or having carbon. I just upgraded skimmers and now I'm wondering...

Would this DIY setup hinder performance in any way?

Is the skimmate locker just so you don't have to smell that gross stuff?

Note: I have no sense of smell and I'm the one that empties it. Lol!!!

Bottle will work just fine. If smell ever became an issue, you could force the bottle to vent into a small bottle of carbon.

Some skimmate lockers do come with a float valve of sorts to keep it from accidently over filling and spewing nasty junk. That would be the other benefit, imo.

The other thing to consider is the auto shut off

I built one for about $10-15 that has a carbon vent and shut off

I used a $4 float valve hooked up to my APEX that does the shut down of the skimmer but you could buy a single float ATO from Autotopoff.com and do the same thing

There are some things our DIY works fine, but others I end up getting the real thing cuz its better...ha ha.

I should add to this thread that I just ordered a swabbie for my new skimmer.

Didn't see this till after I posted. That's cool. Thanks for the input!!!

Pete and I both have the Swabbie. It's a great upgrade to a skimmer.
