sidways tang

Hello all,

I haven't posted to the board for several years but I have a wired problem.

I have had my tank for over five years and all is going well. One day my hippo tang will not come out of it sleeping spot deep between two rocks. even to eat. So after a few days I figure he is old, five years and he is going to die. So this goes on for over two months. The tang never moves out of his spot.

One day about a month ago he is out. His color is horrible and I think this is it. To keep him from dieing in a hard to reach spot I pull out my nursing tank and suction it in the side of the tank and put him in it. So his color is back and his weight seems ok but he hasn't recovered. He lays on his side. It seems he can't muster the strength or more, the coordination to swim upright. Every few days we will find him turned over on his other side or some times he spends the day nose first flailed in the small nursing tank. The only thing i can think of is he has had some kind of stroke.

Has anyone had this happen?

A while back, I had it happen to a niger Trigger. Never did figure out what happened. He had gotten some disease and didn't eat for several weeks.. after that he woudl swim and eat, and then go back to his hiding spot and lay on his side...

Generally when a fish is on it's side as you've described it sounds like a swim bladder infection/issue. put the Tang in a QT tank and treat it gently with Antibiotics, etc. if it does come down to euthanizing, I recommend the freezer method as the most humane.
