Should i build an access door into my stand?

[Just about finished with my 75-gal cabinet - need to add some decorative oak moulding above the doors & stain/seal. Question - I'm thinkin' about building an access door into the left side of the stand for easy access to the bulkheads. Anyone done this? Was wondering if it was worth the effort.

Pic below...thanks, Ross.]

[Did you make the doors as well? It looks really nice right now.

An access door might come in handy occasionally. If you feel the desire to do it... Just make sure your stand is still stable once you've made that alteration.]

[The tank is mainly supported by the 4 corners of the stand.
So if you have cross supports then you can have as many doors as you want.
I would suggest doors at each end as you will need to get to something back behind the sump some day.

Good luck]

[That is not entirely true. The tank is supported by any upright pieces of wood, and the more support the better. As you cut holes into various pieces, additional weight must be supported by less material. It can torque or rachet if it isn't securely built.

Cross braces would be important as additional support, and a solid sheet across the back will avoid it shifting side to side.

Since your stand and tank aren't that large, I don't think you'll have too much trouble reaching in. With larger setups, you have the luxury of space to work with.]

[Dang - not getting notifications about thread replies.

Didn't make the doors - had them made at Sunshine Cabinets in Fort Worth off East 820 & Sun Valley. $35 each for raised panel solid red oak doors.

Frame is made with 2x4s - two upright in each corner glued together & nailed lengthwise for strength (pic below).]

[This can't be done alone. Need someone to hold the boards in place while nailing.]
