Share some frags!!

I thought this club was about propagation of corals, there are group buys going on every month from Ultimatefrags and other similar online stores, dozens of members buy stuff from those places every day. Where does it all go? I know there has to be some people who have these colonies growing out of the water now. I really don't want to order corals from across the country when I know people already have them locally. How can I encourage these people to come out and share their treasures with everyone else. I know there got to be more then zoas, xenias and a bunch of junk equipment that normally gets tossed out in the sales section, come on people post some of your frags that normally cost 100/inch in most online stores! It's fun for everyone, the person spending the money to get a good deal and the seller who get the money.

i suggest asking if someone has a particular corla i are interested in one the want to buy? im am sure plenty will have a frag, some are just not into selling or even fraging in general fraging scares some they have no clue how to and dont want to kill there coral?

Just attempted to frag it recently, sadly I was left with a few dead skeletons the next morning. You gotta take a risk. I see tons of posts being made on the want to buy forum, nobody ever responds to them, or i'm sure even goes there to look. I don't have anything specific to ask for, but i'm sure there are some interesting corals out there in peoples tanks. The Coop program was a big failure from the start, and i understand why, nobody wants to give away anything valuable for free, but at least whoever comes out and posts some cool frags can make some spare change in the sales section.

I got many zoas that I sell all the time. I have a few tanks in Richardson, College Station, and Houston, so anytime I can frag them, I sell them at lower prices than online prices.
and on top of it, the good thing about buying from me versus the store is that they're pest and fungus free... :)

and I also don't think the coop program works very well either. if I can sell those corals, it helps me buy more zoas (rarer ones) and then I can grow them out and share them in the dfw area.

I for one do a lot of trading just the last week i've traded
some zoas and 3 different SPS. My circle of reef friends
and I do a lot of trading and frag value has nothing to do
with it, we just share frags, and it keeps some in a different
tank in case of a tank crash. The only time you will see something
here of mine is if I have more than is already spoken for when
it is fragged and that is not to often. I'll bet this is the case for
a lot of people with reef tanks they are spoken for before they
ever get fragged.

If you have a nice, steady grow from a certain colony, it should be enough to share with more then just your close friends. That's sort of my point, it would be nice if people went beyond that small circle and participated more in spreading corals throughout the club, I mean that's the whole point of having this club is to propagate captive bred frags among members. The value of a coral does matter, the more value you have for your coral the less likely you will want to spread it around. Most of the frags you see, if not all, in the coop is what people don't want and are trying to get rid of, that's why i'm saying charge $50, $60 per frag, still beats shopping at a store. I don't see why people who support this club choose to avoid doing that, and pretend that the nice, generous coop program will just lift off some day.

i can see why...
some people don't want to go through the trouble of fragging, and then go through the hassle of selling and dealing with no shows (when you have to wait for them) or angry buyers who miss out on the deals, etc.
some people only frag when the tank gets full because they like the look of huge colonies rather than a million small colonies in their tank from constant fragging.

what drives fragging and selling really is the $$. Some people don't need that money, and some people can get more money by selling online (honestly, dfw people don't usually pay as much as RC or ebay)

I for one really don't like selling outside dfw just because of shipping issues, and having to deal with people I don't know lead to scamming risks, complaining etc, so I rather sell at 1/2 the price locally.

Can you list a few prices on some 30-40 head colonies of non-rare but colorful zoas?

Thx

??? kind of side track...
it depends on what type. $1~$2/polyp is a good start for average zoas I would say.. at the current market. the bigger the colony, it would be a little less than $1~$2/polyp. this is pricing for captive grown zoas. at the store it would be different, cheaper, but more trouble to clean.

Anton,

My advice is just keep in contact with the folks that you know who buy in that 'level' of corals on a regular basis and keep an eye on the photo/build threads etc.

Just drop them a PM from time to time to see if they have got anything new or exciting.

I'm actually about to put a couple montis I got from you (ReefGod) in the coop. :) I had glued your original disks onto some LR way back when, and they've now already completely encrusted over the disk and onto the LR. So they wouldn't look funny, I pried the disks off and will just let what's on the LR encrust over the vacated spot.

I want members to do the same thing - let the monti encrust over their LR, then pass it on for someone else to do the same.

I'm just waiting to make sure the leftover colonies take and I'll be posting in the coop section.

That's very generous Joel, not sure if I believe that you will ever see it return to the coop once you pass it on to someone else, but i like your idea.

I've thought about that as well, but I guess we'll see. I've never done the coop, and don't know very much about how it works!

It's really your choice, but from selling over the years Joel, I can tell you that the cheaper i've sold my frags, the less experienced hobbyists I have received. People that see a good deal, jump on the sale whether they have the necessary tank conditions or not. When I sold $12 frags, I had people come in that setup their tanks few weeks ago and ask me if it's okay, but I see the trend when I increase the price, I get people that are specificaly searching for that type of coral and know exactly what they need to keep it alive. The coral has more value to them if they spend a $100 instead of getting it for free, it's like winning it in the raffle, they'll take it, but don't really know what exatly it is. With zoas and softies, it's not a big deal, but when giving away such easy to kill corals make sure they go to the right person. Just my opinion.

Agreed......Are you referring to me again? :)

I know it's a hassle, but maybe to keep "us" inexperienced hobbists from making the mistakes you refer to, put an extra line or two in your posts? Something like........."these are SPS corals, need an established tank, MH lighting, good flow, and great water parameters." I know it's a hassle, but may save you from PMs. Might help, especially when you do sell the $12 frags. just a suggestion

No, i wasn't even thinking about you, , I've had tons of people come in over the years and I always post the requirments such as high lighting, good water patameters, difficult to keep, etc. The problem is most people look at the picture and send the pm, everything in the discription is omitted, even the size, which I clearly state 1/4", 1/2", etc. is often ignored, people come in and say, "I though it was a whole colony, why is it so small?"

I agree, Anton. :) I've thought about the issues as well of qualifying coop recipients, and ensuring there is enough tracking (for lack of a better word) so that it's always clear who has the frags and for how long, etc.... Boy, this is starting to look like a coop thread. :) I'm going to bring this up over in the coop section.
