Setting up my skimmer

Just setting up my skimmer. Tank has been set up and running for 3weeks now. Don't have livestock yet.

Was setting up my skimmer last night and all it would do was overflow the collection cup.

Super reef octupus 2000 external. Running it on a rio 1400 pump.

How do I keep it from overflowing??
 
Usually I take off any sponges that are connected to the return. They always seem to make skimmers overflow. Other than that open up the valve a bit to allow more water to exit.
 
Figured it out. Drain pipe was flush against bottom of sump. Had to lift the skimmer higher. Running good now.
