Setting up a qt tank

Before I set this up do I just need tank, water, pump, and sponge from my dt? Can I use the sponge from my dt and replace it with a new sponge? Anybody see any problems here?

How big of a tank is your DT?

I would get it all set up and then do a big water change. Use the water you remove from the DT and seed your QT. The sponge (or part of it if it's your only filtration in the DT) would be great to establish your bacterial colony as the water itself contains very little bacteria.

Might need to plan to have extra SW depending on how big a water change you do. Also don't siphon the substrate or anything out of the display to keep the QT water cleaner (I usually try and suck out muck and detritus depending on what is cycling in my tank but would not do this if I was gonna reuse the water).

You could get one of those hanging NH3 and pH badges to monitor these over the next couple of days.

The dt is a 55 reef that I'm fighting with a number of things. I have a 210 fowlr that I'm about to get fish for.

The 55 I have fish with ich and I'm thinking about pulling the fish I have in there out for about 8 weeks to make sure the ich completely dies.
I turned off the skimmer and removed the carbon and attempted to treat with kordons ich attack which had seemed to work in the past for me. (Twice) Now today I have a dead tang and brown goby. I know the tang had ich spots but was acting fine. Last night both fish were swimming around. The tang I noticed had ich but was still eating and swimming like nothing was wrong. The corals, Lps , mushrooms , and zoas look healthy. Now I have a new algae. My phosphates are at .5 which I suspect is the new algae problem. All other readings are fine. 5-10 nitrate, 0 ammonia and nitrite.

The 210 has 2 damsels but before I put more fish in there I want to start using a qt tank.

I know I need to treat the fish with copper to get rid of ich.

In the future do I need to medicate all fish or just observe them for 3-4 weeks.

I have plenty of saltwater available.

I no nothing helpful about ich. I am sure there are a bunch of threads with procedure. Probably don't want to use DT water for your QT if you are battling problems, but I am no expert, nor do I have a QT. Could just start with fresh saltwater and look for a mini-cycle after using your sponge to seed.

Look around in the fish keeping forum for ich info or start a new thread in that forum.

Ich and other issues are going to be the topic of the presentation that Matt is giving at the January meeting. Should be pretty informative and help you out tremendously. I know I'm looking forward to it.

I just looked at the information and I'm going to try and make it. I'm coming from mesquite so it'll be a 4 hour event.

If I haven't said so already I want to thank everybody that gives any input and help along the way. This group has helped me tremendously in the past few months and has made me more confident I will have success.

Once again THANKS!!

2 oscellaris clown fish
A six line wrasse
A three striped damsel
And a blue unicorn tang.

Two fish died yesterday , a whitecheek tang and a brown goby. I seen ich on the tang but not the goby. All my perimeters looked good other than phosphate at .5
