Setting this up as a Sump...

I bought this trickle filter from a member here as I thought it would be better than using a rubbermaid container under my 65 gallon (it's 36" wide so not a lot of work space in there)

I was wondering what do you guys think the best way to set this up will be -should I use it as a trickle and put rock rubble in the middle let water trickle down through...or use the middle area perhaps as a refugium and put the skimmer and return in the outside area. Is it OK to have return and skimmer in the same compartment?

Should I try to mod in another compartment...that said the tank that's on top of it is filled so this thing isn't coming out....

The tank will not be heavily stocked but will probably be home to a Lionfish which can produce lots of waste.

Your thoughts?

That definitely has potential

I would not put the skimmer and return in the same section and I wouldn't mess with the trickle filter and bio balls. At first glance, but not knowing pump size etc, I would consider the drain in that middle section with some rock and work in a set weirs for a return section separated from the main skimmer section that can also be used as a place for cheato.

I bought a quiet one 3000 for a return pump. So by "weirs" do you mean installing some baffles somewhere in there to creat a 3rd compartment for a skimmer?

yes - and act as a bubble trap.

hard to tell for sure from the picture but there may be some slots for weirs already in place
