Sen 700 pump corrosion and impeller disintegration

Well, I think I found the reason for some of the mysterious fish health and mortality problems my tank was having the last few months. I've been in the process of moving from a 75G tank to a 90G tank, and thus I've taken all the equipment out to clean thoroughly. When I took out the main system pump (a Sen 700) to clean it, I found the mess of corrosion that you see in the pictures and an impeller that has had the ceramic coating eaten off. It's really a shame too, as I thought the Sen 700 was an awesome pump prior to this - it was fairly quiet with low heat, high flow, and high power factor. I'm switching to an eheim now, so hopefully this problem will never show up again.

HOLY SMOKES!

Ya, I think you found the problem. Man, Ive never seen anything like that before. You buy that new?...have any idea on the age? Wow...I hope you didnt have a complete meltdown.

Yes, it was brand new when I bought it a year ago. Surprisingly, it didn't cause a complete tank crash, although from what I've read stainless steel corrosion isn't necessarily an immediate threat to tank life. An interesting side note is that this pump has many clones sold under different brand names, like Sedra, etc...

Just as a point of reference, I had been running SEN 900 and SEN 700 on my return and skimmer for about 6 years. I've even had a 900 in my pond for multiple winters. I never had anything like your pictures - incredible. I have had issues with the impeller corroding or abrading and the pump not restarting when the electricity went off. That's why I've switched to Eheim.

Although it's nowhere near as bad as some Rios I've seen, it's good to have that out of your tank.

Yeah, I've read too much about the Rios to ever trust one of them in my tank, although I'm sure there are plenty of people who've had no problem at all with them...

Now that I have the eheim 1260 pump, I'm starting to think that the reason it's such a good pump has a lot to do with its weight. The sheer mass of the unit seems to provide a much more stable vibration-absorbing platform, letting the impeller rotate very smoothly. So far I can't say enough good things about the eheim...

I am one of those rio users! I am going to switch real soon but I have a Rio return I have been useing for about a year. I feel my good luck could run out at anytime.
