Self injuring Flame Angel ????? -- Sigh! :(

Bekah & I are beside ourselves

We woke up a couple of days ago to this!

He has been in QT perfectly healthy until now. His eyes are all cut up like someone took a knife to him. He has lost his color and I have not seen him eat since we found him like this. It looks like he got into a major fight with another fish. However, the only other denizens of the QT are two percs seperated by egg crate!

Is there any disease that could cause this that I do not know about? Is it possible he was trying to get at the percs and tore himself up on the egg crate?

Any thoughts would be gladly appreciated. I am trying to eliminate any possibility of disease so i can set the percs loose in the display and let Flamey has the QT to himself to get better.

Thanks! :(

His fins aren't looking so hot either on the back so I'm guessing disease. Try to PM Amanda and see if she can help you out. My try posting on Reefcentral Fish Disease and Treatment forum also as there are some pretty sharp folks over there!

You need to act quick said:
I would like to act quick but I need to know what I am battling. I would hate to place the percs in the main tank to give the angel free roam of the 20g QT without knowing what was the problem and then endanger my regal tang who finally got out of QT a month ago and is healthy & ich free!

If you do post in the Fish Disease Forum on RC, Emerald is Amanda's username there.

Update. Well the consensus seems to be bacterial infection. I went out and bought some recommended maracyn 2 and just dosed the tank. I will post up how things progress. Thanks!

Hi Mike, its definately bacterial. The Maracyn 2 is pretty good and should help. If its not looking better in a couple days let me know and I can recommend some different stuff.
I would be sure to keep the clowns in QT for the treatment as well, to be sure that they havent been affected.
Good luck!

Thanks Amanda,
I just walked in tonight from some trailwork and looked in on the angel. He is more active tonight and his color seems to be returning. The eyes are still pretty messed up but I definately see an overall improvement. I will continue to update and let you know.

Thanks!

Is he eating yet? said:
Sigh. Not that I have seen. He is definately more active and his eyes seem to be getting better though. I hope he will start eating soon. I do leave nori in the tank plus I place a few peices of mysis shrimp on his side to pick up if he wants. I think a peice or two have dissapeared but it is hard to tell if he ate them or not.

I will update later as things progress.

It looks as if he got his butt kicked by the clowns. Clowns can be pretty territorial, much like damsels...

Did you just wake up one morning and he was all jacked up like that?

Have you tried some live brine, or garlic extreme? I know brines not very nutricious, but often if you can entice them to eat live brine, thats better then nothing at all at least.

Good luck, hope it all works out!!

The clowns are seperated from the angel by egg crate so the clowns couldn't have beat him up. It is definately a bacteria infection.

Pretty much that what it was like. However thinking back on it, I seem to recall he wasn't eating as much as he used to the days prior to him 'breaking out'!

Been doing all of that. He doesn't eat in front of me at the time. Hopefully that will change soon.

Well flamey bit the dust last night  .

He had been looking very good from the maracyn treatments and was actually starting to get growth back in his fins and his eyes almost cleared completely up.

However he never really started eating & I think he starved to death. I tried everything including garlic in all his food (flake, brine, nori, etc) but he never really ate. It looked like he was trying to but it looked like he couldn't see the food well enough to get it.

I guess we are a fish short but an experience wiser. :(

I'm so sorry. Flame Angels are tough... either they make it or they don't. They have reputation of dying at 2 weeks or at 2 months, but once you clear both of those hurdles, you should be able to keep one for years.

Mike,

Sorry to hear that. It is frustrating to already have the QT up and running and still not able to save the little guys. Talk with you soon.

Agree. After loosing 2 myself purchased from a LFS I decide my next would be from a fellow reefer's tank. Which I did about a month ago and no problems yet.
