Are they any good ?

I mean, I can see the one in question is $839.00 retail.

Anyway, There's a guy local to me that wants to trade for some stuff so I thought I'd ask if these are good skimmers.

It has 2 x Sicce NW pumps, and it's only 20" tall. It's PERFECT for my sump, but I'd have to replub my returns to feed it. The only feed pump I have is my 9.5 return, which is barely strong enough for my return flow.

I'd have to use the Mag-7 I have as a salt stir as a feed pump and throttle it back to maybe 500 gph.

Any ideas ?

Should I just jump all over it and resell it ?

You see a lot of these"premiere" skimmers coming up for sale, in the last few months. There are a lot of less expensive skimmers out there now that are giving these "top of the line" unit's a run for their money if not flat out kicking their booty. The MSX200 would be a good match for your system and leave you with money to spare. I went a lil' overboar and purchased the MSX250 for my 130G an it is seriously oversized for my system...at least I can a a few more fish now without too much worry. I am really thinking about "downsizing" somewhat(at least in my mind) and going with one of the new cone skimmer's.

Cheers,

Hmm,

Might be a good call. Looks very similar in application to the MSX, but the MSX is of course, "new" wheras this one is about 2-1/2 years old.

I am sure there have been design changes to the ATI in the last 2 years.

I am still hung up on the Octopus Extreme 200. The only think I hate is that it doesn't have a Sedra type NW impeller. It looks just like the needlewheel on my CSS 125, which I am convinced is why it doesn't perform too well on a light load.

Its funny if my water is fresh from a feeding, or a waterchange, the CSS 125 pulls out all kind of crap. But just day to day, it hardly skims at all and my water stays slightly crappy with floaties.

The MSX's have been out over a year an is the exact same skimmer as the octopus extreme....only the name is different. Both of these skimmers come with both needlewheel and mesh impeller as does some of the cone skimmers. I kinda recall the 200 model's working better with mesh.

so is the needlewheel with the little arms, with the nubs on them the only one's Octo uses ?

I wonder how they'd perform with a Euro-Reef style pinwheeled Sedra ?

The Bubble King is straight threadwheel / mesh IIRC.

I'd prefer to not run a mesh as to be lower maintenance. its going into a tight fitting sump

Have you looked at the Tunze Master Doc 9410 skimmer? It appears to have a small footprint and is supposed to be very quiet.

Octo and MSX come with both a pinwheel impeller, and a meshwheel impeller. You can pick whichever one you feel like dealing with. For a single-pump skimmer I would recommend the meshwheel, for a dual pump I would use a pinwheel because you don't need the extra performance as much.

The pinwheel looks like this, and works a bit better than a needle wheel:
